"Getting yourself paid for letting people meet you is quite obscene IMO"

Isn't it what Ronnie's Gf did some time ago...?

I disagree, dewlover. If people pay for something they deserve to get it. A meet and greet should encompass handshake and quick photo. Certainly not conversation given the number of attendees, but Ronnie could and should have given an hour of his time. Someone should have been on hand to coordinate the event just like at a a booksigning.

no problem, you can "disagree" all you want, in fact, i'd be surprised if most people on a MB like this one didn't, however, i've been into the music scene way too long to think paying to "meet" a guy like this is a smart idea...

I agree with your sentiment about meet and greets, but I don't think a caveat emptor should apply. Attend at your own risk should not be a label attached to any celebrity appearance unless they want to harm their career in the process.
I wouldn't have paid for it (and I was two hours away from Youngstown), but I don't think anyone deserves to be ripped off.

At $150-200 a head, sounds like this "joke" has Ronnie laughing all the way to the bank.

It's not a question of "deserving", or not "deserving", it's a question of being naive, and having an empty life...

glad i ate too many xanax and woke up late!

i live 10 minutes away and drove past "the butler" around noon and saw maybe 10 cars in the parking lot.

memberships are $30, there was nothing on "the butler" www about a $100+ meet & greet, i blame it on the MASONS!

oh well it's a little positive news for youngstown, rated at one time close to the top 10 murder cities in the US, poor economy and past mafia connections.
it's nice to see they are living up to their past reputation.

OH WAIT, lest we not forget ex-congressman and convicted felon:
youngstowns very own james traficant, he's an artist to!

I THINK to walk in "the butler" is free.
i'll make it down sometime in the next 30 days...

I think "meet & greet" just means you get to be in the same room for a few minutes.

A story from my hometown newspaper, the Warren Tribune-Chronicle:

Rolling Stone gathers crowd
Guitarist Ronnie Wood attends Butler show
September 22, 2010 - By ANDY GRAY Tribune Chronicle

YOUNGSTOWN - The Mahoning Valley got a glimpse of rock royalty - and not much more than that - as Rolling Stones guitar player Ronnie Wood came to the Butler Institute of American Art Tuesday for the opening of an exhibition of his paintings, drawings and prints.

About 300 people paid up to $200 each to attend the reception for the exhibition, which will be on display through Nov. 21. At about 8:30 p.m., the guest of honor appeared and thanked the Butler for inviting him.

''It's really a great honor to be asked by the Butler to have my first proper museum exhibition in the United States,'' Wood said.

Some of Wood's canvases measure 7 feet and more, but Wood said his work looked like ''postage stamps'' in the majestic gallery space compared to how they look in his studio.

After his brief remarks, Wood stopped to talk to a couple people he recognized and quickly was swarmed by the crowd, which was dressed in everything from little black dresses to concert T-shirts. He then was escorted upstairs and stayed ensconced in the museum's offices. His assistant could be heard telling one of the security guards, ''I think it's going to be too difficult to protect him.''

Guests settled for grabbing up autographed copies of the exhibition catalog for $40 and signed, limited edition prints for several hundred dollars more and admired the art work that fills three upstairs galleries in the museum.

John Games of Warren said, ''It's incredible to see such multi-talented work. For him to come to Youngstown, it's like a lightning bolt from the heavens.''

Nate Miller of Boardman said, ''I've never seen his real paintings before. I've only seen copies. And I think the originals blow them all away. I'm really impressed.''

Lena Marie Natale came all the way from Gettysburg, Pa., after first hearing about the show. She waited 8 hours to get his autograph at a book signing in New York last year. Why does she do it?

''He's sexy,'' she said of the 63-year-old musician. ''He can still rock.''

She was disappointed she couldn't get an autograph from him in person, but she was carrying a bag with one of the prints and three signed catalogs.

Butler Director Louis Zona said Wood arrived awhile before the reception but didn't have much time to look at the Butler's permanent collection.

''He wanted to, but his assistant said if he gets started, we'll never get him away from the paintings,'' Zona said.

In a telephone interview Tuesday afternoon before heading to Youngstown from Cleveland, Wood said he loves to go to museums. But when you're a Rolling Stone, sometimes it's difficult to enjoy an art show undisturbed.

"I was in St. Petersburg (Russia), and there were so many people looking at me than the old masters on the walls,'' he said. "Didn't you come in here to look at the paintings?''

Wood frequently draws inspiration from those old masters. "Beggar's Banquet,'' one of the largest and most impressive oils in the Butler show, was inspired by his desire to introduce the sepia colors of Rembrandt and Caravaggio to his own take on the Stones' 1968 album cover. It also gave him a chance to insert himself into the picture since the record was recorded several years before he joined the band.

The exhibition ranges from those large-scale paintings to pen-and-ink sketches he did in the mid-70s while on tour with Faces. Wood said he and Rod Stewart would write "stupid poetry,'' and Wood would illustrate the words which they planned to collect in a book called "A Variety of Annoyances.''

"We never did do that book,'' Wood said. "One day maybe Rod and me might do that.''

Another series of works features ballet dancers, which Wood created after he was invited to be a guest in the wings and paint the Royal Ballet at London's Royal Opera House.

"I've always been intrigued by the human form and movement, and nothing displays that better than ballet,'' Wood said.

Rock 'n' roll has its share of movement as well, and one of Wood's greatest talents is capturing the energy of contemporary music on canvas.

Because of his frenetic moves on stage, Wood said Mick Jagger is the hardest of his bandmates to paint, but no one is harder to paint than Eric Clapton.

"The one I've scrapped the most is Eric Clapton,'' Wood said. "I've seen some of the ones I threw away resurface - 'Is this one of yours? It looks like one of the Bee Gees?' I can't throw them away. Someone always finds them.''

Musicians are a recurring subject in Wood's work, and for him art and music always are intertwined.

"I often paint to music and often play (guitar) to a painting,'' he said. "The thought you put into both makes me think twice before I put pen to paper. You can say a lot with a single line. It's the same with music. Sometimes, it's what you don't play that makes the song stand out.''

About 200 people paid $150 - $200 to attend a "Meet & Greet Reception" for Ronnie Wood at the Butler Insitute of American Art in Youngstown, Ohio. It was from 8pm - 10pm. Ronnie appeared in public around 8:15..spoke for about a minute, talked to a couple people standing behind him...and left. Where did he go? Seems like he hid in a room for about an hour before slipping out.

wow- most "meet & greets" that I've seen include the opportunity to have you pic snapped with
the celeb etc..... Were others that attended equally pissed off?

1st - some blame goes to the Butler Institute too...the liaison should have made it perfectly
clear to Ronnie (& his peeps) that he has an obligation to stand around an chat for an hour or so.

2nd - Ronnie is simply clueless. Assuming this was an event where his artwork was FOR SALE...
he could've sold many more pieces had he simply chatted and shared a few anecdotes with potential buyers.
And heck, all that attended were adoring fans! not people that were going to nag at him about his
drinking...his girlfriends...or his ex-wife.

after reading Goldsmith's post...it seems the people of Ohio & Butler Institute were too starstruck
and lowered their expectations.......just happy to breathe the same air.......sad.

* and on top of the $200 they had to pay another $40 for his autograph???

The article at least spells out the security issue. This is understandable, but one wonders why Ronnie's management and the museum did not adequately cover this beforehand. What a terrible shame to those who spent the money to attend.

No offense Rocky...but "security issues"?
There are many ways to address "security issues".

From the article: "His assistant could be heard telling one of the security guards, ''I think it's going to be too difficult to protect him.''

HIS ASSISTANT IS TELLING SECURITY?? Shouldn't it be the other way around?

Ok,Ok,you were lucky enough to meet one of the Stones for free.
But some people are unlucky, you know.
See, I've tried a couple of times (2 times )to meet Mr Jagger in Pocé sur Cisse & was not able to see him.
Although I am not sure that if I could get across the man,I would have the guts to bother him by asking an autograph .

he did the same thing in Vegas. I had a VIP pass. He arrived eral late, ran straight to a back room, and the only way you could meet him was if you agreed to buy an ORIGINAL painting. Like $50K and up!

Unreal.

Dude's probably just got a B type personality whose been thrust into the limelight. That's probably why he's been drinking all these years, to mask his inhibitions. Sounds like the 'ass-sistant' wouldn't let him look at the permanent collection, and Ronnie apparently didn't have the will to object even to that. He probably didn't want to make a scene, the same way he deals with the Stones. He's a people-pleaser -- unfortunately, the person he was pleasing was his assistant, and not the fans. Ronnie's probably the stone-cold opposite of an @#$%&, he's just in an @#$%& business. As far as paying $200 to hang out with him - you pays your money, you takes your chances baybee ain't no guarantees in this life cool smiley
