Mick Taylor's Top Ten
Date: May 21, 2011 19:44

The finest moments from MT. Hard to keep it to just ten. Tried to mix up the era and not just focus on Stones output. Soooooooo much great stuff left out.

1. Vacation - Blues From Laurel Canyon: Easily as good as Clapton's playing/tone on the Beano record.

2. Marriage Madness - Back To The Roots

3. Sway - Sticky Fingers: The quintessential MT solo. Truly defines his playing, feel and tonality for me. My favorite solo of all time.

4. Can't You Hear Me Knocking - Sticky Fingers: Act 1: The Keith show. Act 2: The MT show. Encapsulates, for me, what Keith does at his best and what MT brings to the table for the Stones (or brought).

5. Dead Flowers - Get Your Leeds Lungs Out: Love how he extends the solo on this live boot. Super sweet and tasty licks. Maybe the tastiest ever.

6. Sympathy For The Devil - Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out

7. Time Waits For No One - IORR

8. Gimme Shelter - Brussels Affair: Jesus, he was on fire this tour. Obviously the lead is ridiculously hot. He just owns this version. Flying high above everybody on the stage...metaphorically.

9. Spanish/A Minor - Mick Taylor: Jazz/rock fusion heaven.

10. Winter - 2 Hot 4 Snakes: Went with this over the GHS studio version. Mostly for the extended solo. Flip a coin.

Thanks for taking the time to read. Look forward to your opinions.

I would like to add Stranger In This Town, title track from that record he semmed to have been cheated financially and especially Lost In The Desert from A Stones' Throw. From his first solo album I love Alabama.

I can think of a couple LIVs I would toss in there.

Sway from live album with Carla Olson - probably one of the greatest guitar solos ever.

Sway belongs on that list...
Also love that guitar sound on "Let It Loose,"
although I don't know who's playing what on that.
Love the guitar work on Get Your Ya Yas Out.
It's all good...

Where is Blind Willie McTell, there are a few great versions of this song. A Dylan song, yes, but his arrangement is excellent.

<Do we know for a fact that Taylor is playing here (Bitch)?> <DP>

No, but I sure like Taylor's fluid version. And Keith is great here.

isnt it great how two such different players can sound so similar ?
all through the song it could be either but the closing variations clinch it , its mick taylor

Without focusing on a particular performance I would also mention the '82-'84 Bluesbreakers reunion period. Taylor's playing during that time was absolutely joyous. "Have You Heard," "My Time After A While," "So Many Roads," "The Stumble"...etc. Each show had many highlights. Mayall gave Taylor plenty of room to move and lots of verbal encouragement. It was a perfect spot for Taylor. He was the star of the show without being the "star." Very little of this period was ever released, but there are many fine recordings that are prized by Taylor collectors.

I have a soft spot for his slide solo on I Don't Know Why from July 1969.

What do you have to back this up? All we know is the Glyn Johns-interview about Keith coming in late, changing the RIFF on Bitch, and all of a sudden the song was swinging.

And the solo guitar is classic Keith, imo.

While I wasn't there, I can only judge by my ears. To my ears, when Keith and Taylor really blended (the ancient art of weaving) on YA-YA'S, "Bitch" and "CYHMK" on STICKY FINGERS, and LADIES & GENTLEMEN it was as good as it got. I say that as someone who loves SOME GIRLS through TATTOO YOU, and ranks 1990s studio output by the band (concert performances were far less consistent) or the Glimmers solo as among their best work. And yes, I love the Brian Jones era minus parts of SATANIC MAJESTIES.

"Dancing with Mr. D" from Brussels 1973..........

1. Sway w/ Carla Olson - Too Hot for Snakes
2. Call It Stormy Monday w/Albert King - '82 "Mayall and Bluesbreakers Jammin' With The Blues Greats" The last time a blues great ever said "Michael, take a few".
3. Rip This Joint/Jumpin Jack Flash/Street Fighting Man - Brussels (Kind of a cheat, but they play it like its one song, and he smokes through the entire set.)
4, Started Walking The extended 8:30 live version , recorded at Falmer College, Brighton, May 1968.
5. Sweetheart Like You - Infidels
6.Vacation - Laurel Canyon
7. Sway - Sticky Fingers
8. Shine A Light - Exiles
9. The solo's between I Can't Quit You Baby and My Own Fault (both excellent Taylor vehicles themselves) from Diary of A Band, Volume One with Mayall and the Bluesbreakers. Not sure if Mayall was trying a Zappa here, but the solos burn and then stop on a dime for some talks with Taylor, Keef Hartley, Mayall and some Dutch fellow who's already worried Taylor might leave the band like Clapton and Green, but if you can get beyond that, the playing is borderline insane considering this was from the Crusade tour and MT was like 17 or 18.
10. I Ain't Lying - Bootleg version NOT Exiles re-release, whatever they ended up calling it.

Thought this was a great idea until I realize how many I'm leaving off here. There's surely another 20 or more just as good that could have made it on here on another day.
After writing about number 9, I'm wonder if MT is the only musician who played with two Keefs in his career.

I think he played at least with ten Keefs. All in one.

Thanks for your interesting list. I would like to add the different solos of MT on "You Can't Always Get What You Want" and "Love In Vain". No version I know is lacking of intensity, musicality and technical brilliance.

Heartbreaker - London 73
Cant stop - with Alvin Lee 1981

of course it is , and i dont mean that it isnt keiths riff either i just mean that the riffing guitar is played by mick t because of the closing variations doesnt sound like anything keith would have played.

You can count me in...absolutely a spot-on solo that goes straight to ones soul...the sheer imagination of the Stones doing this song live in 1969 or 1972 with an extended Taylor slide solo sends shivers down my spine.

His solo on Love In Vain - YaYas is of the same otherworldly quality, he absolutely nails it,and everytime I hear this version, I can't await the start of his solo.
