Has anyone covered a Stones song and, in your opinion, surpassed the original recording?

Won´t happen. Kiss had a decent cover of 2000 Man, though.

"Out of Time" by Chris Farlowe was, in my opinion, a killer version and was far superior to the Stones' version.

No. Stones songs are very hard to cover. It's a feel thing.

I think the Lindsey Buckingham-cover of I AM WAITING is better than the original. Ellen Foley also has a great version of STUPID GIRL. It has all the guitars that the original didn't have.
AFTERMATH, I think, contains a lot of songs that beg to be covered.

Equal at least imo. She had a great voice.

I heard a version of BITCH by Mudhoney once, that I really liked. No way was it better than the Stones of course, but it was great. Only heard it once, probably over 10 years ago, but it really impressed me. (Guess I should finally order it one of these daze).

I agree, it's not better, but equally good. The guitars rock on the live versions, thanks to the great Waddy.

By the way ...why speaking of better, I don't hope artist have the intention to make it better, but to give their own swing to it.

A lot of the versions being mentioned I haven't heard, so Ellen Foley's version of Stupid Girl is the only one I can think of that might be better than the Stones original. The reason is because it flat out rocks, while the Stones version is a mid-60's pop song. I like the original, but Ellen's version shows what a great rock song it can be, although it does sound a bit dated due to it's late 70's/early 80's production, especially the sax.

I agree the stones are hard to beat at their own songs. The most you can hope for is to equal them, and your lucky to do that.

But did he do it better? I don't think so, it's more different but equal, I feel. I wouldn't argue the point either though, I think it's good enough that it comes down to opinion and taste.

I really don't believe that anyone can sing a song better..than the original singer.

I've always liked Johnny Winter's version of "Let it Bleed" (almost sounds more Stones-like than the original).

MUCH better than the original lol!

Does Bittersweet Sympathy count as being a cover of Loogs The Last Time?? More seriously The Hangmens version of Citadel is at least an equal of the Stones
