After hearing Johnny Winter's version of Silver Train during the summer before Goat's Head Soup was released, the Stones' own version was disappointing.

"Out of Time" by Chris Farlowe was, in my opinion, a killer version and was far superior to the Stones' version.

I'd have to go with that too, the Stones' version is a bit too .... hmm how to describe .... 'pop' I guess, for my liking at any rate.

Otis Redding's version of Satisfaction comes to mind.

That one gets my vote as well, hands down better than the original

Well, a lot of good covers. Especially Farlowes Out of time. What about Searchers Take it or leave it! This is really much better than the rather awful version on Aftermath

Someone mention Leon Russell's version of JJF, which is very good..not the Stones but very good.

Two good, yet unexpected covers of Sympathy for the Devil were done by Talking Head (live bootleg) and Natalie Merchant.

Lastly, though I am sure to get flack...Phish performing Exile last year sounded better then the Stones covering Exile...and Phish only had one guitarist. (and I am not a Phish fan...I was just stunned at their obvious admiration of the Stones...ok let the nasty retorts fly!)

Actually, it is a damn great version!

Redd Kross does a killer "Citadel" on the Teen Babes From Monsanto EP.

Social Distortion's "Backstreet Girl" is an interesting take, as well. Not sure if either of these exceed the Stones' versions, but they come damn close.

Only one of the many covers, that I think tops the original: Dead Flowers - Cowboy Junkies

Dead Flowers by RS is the definitive version. It's their country anthem.

Alway's loved this version of Soundgarden

Play it loud.................................

Not fair to compare this one. Chris Cornell is such an amazing singer & Kim Thaiyl (sp?) is one of the best rock guitarists of all time! As much as I love the Stones version, I think this one wins!

I always liked Solomon Burke's version of I Got The Blues.

And I guess Mick was honoured by this.

Eta James' version of Miss You blows the Stones' rendition out of the water, in my view. Her version is so sinister and menacing.

>Chris Cornell is such an amazing singer

Ugh, my lasting memory of this guy was at the MTV Awards in '94. He was asked during a cut-away moment during the show what he thought of the Stones; he basically rolled his eyes and dismissed them as being "before his time". The interviewer heroically took him to task: "What do you mean before your time? They're on tour right now! You could have seen them play during this very show tonight!" Cornell was totally taken aback -- whatta schmuck.

ok, but that has nothing to do w/ his singing. and not everyone likes the stones.

>and not everyone likes the stones

I think everyone here does.

P.S. I prefer a pithy rebuke but in this instance, I would like to question: if this jerk doesn't like the Stones, why bother covering one of their songs?

I couldn't listen to the Chris version yet but Rolling Stones "OUT OF TIME" is just perfect! POP? I think is pure rythm & blues with a beautiful Brian touch.

Covers aren't better, are different!. I go for KISS "2000 man".
