Keith's favorite Beatles song; and a challenge to members of this board
Posted by: rocker1 ()
Date: May 13, 2011 08:45

On the recent Jimmy Fallon show Keith said his favorite Beatles song was Please Please Me. I never thought that song was any great shakes until I saw this performance by McCartney from 2005.

There's a profiency and an energy to this performance that is interesting. And the last portion, from about 1:35 to the end, is nostalgic in a powerful way with the crowd reaction shots. McCartney's live shows have an interesting mix of fans--from weepy women who perhaps saw the Beatles circa '66, to very serious rockers who simply appreciate talent. (Of course, the demographics of a Stones show are worthy of a college dissertation as well...)

Honestly, and here's a challenge to members of this board, post ANY Stones video since 2000 that is even close to this clip as far as an overall display of, well, ROCK music. (And if you write this clip off as "pop" music I'll counter that even the Stones' "rockiest" songs as played live since 2002 are simply weak compared to the onslaught of guitar/bass/drums that bust forth out of this performance. If you disagree, post ANY Stones video post-2002 indicating otherwise.)

Yes, I think that despite the static demeanor of the band here, they kick ass. That drummer is @#$%&' amazing, and McCartney performs with an easy brilliance and confidence (and technical profiency) that is worthy of kudos. (Well, he always does this...and not only on the old Hofner; he plays the old Epiphone Casino better than Keith has played ANYTHING in decades. Oh geez...there I go slagging Keith again after just praising him to high Heaven over on the Jimmy Fallon thread.....

Anyway...Keith knows a good song when he hears it.

I heard it already 1963 and have always had it as a 4/5, but there are 10 5/5 on that debut album for example brilliant I saw here standing there...Can someone please play Strawberry fields for Keith....

Hey, Come On. Great post. Makin' me possibly eat some crow. But...it's a different sort of energy. Well, there's certainly *something* there that's very appealing. Keith is too @#$%&' cool, so that's almost not fair to Paul, who has to actually *play* a song and not get by on the strength of his uber-vibe! I do have to smile when I see this Silver clip, though, as it's great. But you're almost not playing fair. Paul will never be that cool. But this wasn't a "who is the coolest?" challenge! Okay...you almost put me in a mood to concede, but I'm still not gonna. I give it to Paul still for the overall performance of the band and the projection of the song right through the brains and the heart of the audience. Although Keith scores on style points. I readily concede on that.

the great thing about Paul in the 2000's is that his touring band really sounds like a band, it's not a star-trip, just a living legend sharing with the audience (in exchange of orbital ticket prices - just like the Stones) and having fun playing with those guys, who undoubtedly must be having a blast playing Betales songs with Macca.

Please Please Me is two minutes (two minutes!) of sheer brilliance.
An incredible record and song. It's got so much emotion in it, the melody and harmony. Their third Ed Sullivan appearance is the best version.
I remember seeing this clip, with the fan reaction and the weeping.
They're probably weeping for their own lost youth, remembering a different time.
Funny, every time I hear PPM now, I feel rather melancholy, even though it's a fast, peppy, uplifting record.

Lennon said in interviews that that was one song along with I Want to Hold Your Hand he would like to do differently live on the tour for Double Fantasy. A slower version in a higher key...that would have been beautiful.
I can agree that Paul's band is having a blast. Last summer when I was at the sound check for the Salt Lake City show, he and the band were trying to work out a part on Rock Show, and it was classic. They did the part, stopped, did it again not quite riht and Abe, the drummer, said, "Ipod man!" and then suddenly the studio version comes on over the PA and they all are intently listening with grins and then it stops and they replay it live perfectly! Classic!

Brilliant song! The emotion it clearly brought to the two women near the end of the song actually brought a tear to my eye! - Such is the power of music!

I prefer Come On personally, but I guess that's why I'm on here instead of a Beat-less forum.

You got to love this. It is a great 2 minute pop classic blast.

I always wondered about the lyrics and whether Lennon was being tongue in cheek and getting away with one (I'm sure "she's a big teaser" wasn't the original words in Daytripper, and then there is "fish and finger pie").

I love the Beatles as much as the Stones and I love Macca as much as I love Keith (ahem.. in a brotherly way).

Both are my musical heroes/inspirations. I always wanted to play guitar like Keith and bass like Paul and I can after all these years (a bit).

The Paul McCartney gig at Hyde Park last summer was seriously awesome. Pure joy. I was near the front.

I only hope when I'm 67 I'm as able and active.

that's a crock, rocker1 dear - Keith is pouring his whole self into delivering that number,
and making it look as natural as breathing is part of his professionalism.

i love the Rolling Stones

This still rocks more than most other bands:

Please Please Me is one of my top 5 favorite Beatles songs - the energy is absolutely fantastic - knocks me out every time.

I love that Paul video you posted - how much fun is that crowd having - wish I was there!

Wasn't looking too good, but I was feeling real well.

Love Please Please Me. I have always prefered the early Beatles to the mid-late period, anyway. I'll take With The Beatles over Sgt. Pepper, any day.

The band is hot. Charlie sounds great.

I can't cope with Mick's silly diction and his striding about all over the place and his pointy stances (it looks so rehearsed). When he was younger he could stand on the spot and you wouldn't be able to take your eyes off him. But it's the striding bacj and forth.. does my head in.

Why did he start that silly vocal mangling and why can't he just sing it straight, the way he used to.

The same reasons I can't watch Shine A Light.

That's from the overdub session for New Faces from the Voodoo sessions. There's a whole album of Keith doing that kind of thing. Look up Salty Dog and Cocaine Blues, either under Keith or the Stones, and you'll probably find more.

Imagine Jagger being on tour 2005 with 3 guys 30 years younger than him.
He would tear McC to pieces.

I don't know. I thought the Shine A Light version of As Tears Go By tells us a lot about Mick and Keith. Mick is trying to sing his heart out, and Keith is watching with pure admiration. I think Keith really admires Mike Jagger and to me that song on that video shows it.
