Had tickets for the damned U2 spectacle because it was the thing to do. YAWN.

Then Levon was announced for our town on the same night. SH*T!

Then Bono threw his back out and postponed til next effing year. YEAH!

Got my U2 money back and bought Levon tickets with money to spare for beer. WOOHOO!

Life is good.

Levon is one of the nicest, most natural people I have met in the music business.

Levon sounds pretty bitter in the autobiography that he wrote about 15 years ago. But he radiates joy with his current band.

To The Greek --

Do you know Levon Helm well?

Further...and The Greek probably doesn't believe this either.

I went to the Troubadour in Los Angeles in late 1973 to see Dr. John. There was a crowd outside, joyously freaking out to see my two companions John Lennon and Elton John.

Levon and Garth Hudson gently, respectfully, made their way through the fans and they told Elton how much they admired his songs...John said,"What about...mine?"

Elton and Lennon were great fans of The Band so they both were delighted by Leon and Garth's effusive praise.

Dr. John was wonderful in his own imaginative way. Lennon and Elton were mesmerized. Dr. John gazed questioningly at me from the stage, which was about four inches away. I looked at my two friends, sitting there just digging it. Hmmm...I thought. When there was a brief break between songs, I said to them, "Do you wanna get up there and become Nighttrippers? It took no urging.

They stepped up to that small stage immediately. Dr. J's band was over the moon. So was the audience. Especially because Lennon in these year wasn't known for his public "jamming."
