The Keith falling asleep story is the only good thing about this song.

"Hand of Fate" would have been a better choice for a single from this album.

I love the outro of this song. But fool to cry is too long.

don't like it, never have. always made a point to skip over it when I played the lp.
when I put Black And Blue on my ipod I replaced it with Worried About You.
I also started with Slave, kept Hot Stuff for a funky 1 2 start, making Black And Blue 9 songs but that's another discussion for another thread.

I agree and I rarely bash on Stones stuff... but...

This is one of those songs I remember from my back in the day and I recall it being WAAAAY over played on the radio and I thought it sucked back then, it was slow and boring and somehow I was stuck with a group of "people" who also waaaaay overplayed it at parties (along with Framton comes alive)(another one I still cant stand)(two horrors of 1976) winking smiley...

And to this day I still wonder why the record company, or the band, or anyone, would ever imagine that putting this song out as a single would be good for the band or album sales or anything or anybody.

I also remember back in the day, when the story came out that Keith fell asleep onstage while playing it, I laughed my ass off and said to those Frampton / FTC people "SEE!! even Keith hates it!".

I actually enjoy the first part of the song but get lost at the break towards the end. I don't know who mentioned it earlier (about the earlier take that runs around 6 minutes) but I actually really enjoy that version more. Quality take.

A lighlight of the 1976 Tour of Europe!! (not only during the concerts where they did not Play 'Angie' but during the others as well because 'Angie' was not very well performed).

This could possibly be the worst song in their catalog. Even the lyrics are horrible.

If you have kids they're not THAT horrible?

It's simply not one of their better songs.

I recommend mental therapy to anyone deeming this song favorable. This song really gets on my nerves.

This song should be given the death penalty without any court of law.

It´s horrible, nothing more to be said about that song. I wish FTC wouldn´t exist at all. It´s a crying shame.

It's no where near - not even in the same galaxy - as Streets Of Love, Following The River, Always Suffering and Already Over Me.

Those are horrendous. Fool To Cry is killer.

Wow. A lot of hate and dislike for something the Stones did to break up the rock band they'd been and to do something different that's good. It's not like they were being too trendy behind the curve like they were on BRIDGES TO BABYLON or DIRTY WORK, which were songs just to be different, not to be interesting or good.

Haters gonna hate! Afraid of change! They want the same ol' thang.

I find it amazing that FTC is such a polarizing song amoungst us fans, unless some are just pouring gas on the fire. Again, I just think that long outtake of FTC is fantastic. GasLightStreet thanks for carrying the flag.

Always loved it. A good, catchy soul ballad. The live versions were even better.

But maybe it is a time machine thing... maybe they created the song and then went back in time and were crying about it and someone's daughter asked him why he is crying and he answered because we made such a bad song about crying...

Which came first Daddy, the crying or the song about the crying??

Listening to Fool to Cry on Father's Day 2017 :-)

Did Jagger ever write/comment on what his inspiration was for this track? I'd be interested to know.

Keith delivered some of the most understated leads lines of his career with some amazing subtleties.

Rewind 1971-1984 was my first Stones album. It had Fool To Cry on it, so naturally it grew on me because it was stuck in between great songs Beast of Burden and Waiting on a Friend. I thought it was the Stones trying to do Barry White.

His daughter?

From timeisonourside.com:

«It's surprising, isn't it? It's the family side. Well, it IS true, the Stones ARE getting on, and have done it with a lot of girls and what could be surprising if you've got children, eh? At the end! Keith's had SO many, I don't know... and other girls have claimed that they've got my baby and it's not true»...

- Mick Jagger, 1976

«This dates from the period when I had a young child, my daughter Jade, around a lot, calling me daddy and all that. It's another of our heartmelting ballads, a bit long and waffly at the end maybe, but I like it».

- Mick Jagger, 1993

Yes, count me in as well, I've always liked it. No reason, I always just liked it.

It's probably the first time where Mick Jagger sounds like an actual grownup on record, probably for his daughter, years ahead of when John Lennon was singing his "Beautiful Boy" ballad to his son.

Even rock stars can be loving parents, too!

It's alright, certainly one of the more pleasant songs on Black and Blue. Not a killer but it's okay, the "climax" sort of works.
