There is nothing in the whole song that goes beyond A Major or A minor pentatonic. There is clear use of Major 3rd of A Major as well as repeated further use of other notes from that scale...

....emphasizes the A Major scale more in its verse melody by way of the addition of the 5th and 6th notes of the scale. So that's 6 notes from A Major scale on the official version. The Exile melody actually begins on the 5th, where as the acoustic version only uses 4 notes, beginning on the 3rd.

- yes, and I'm sure MJ and KR had this very discussion in the bar right after.

or not.

probably not.

Actually I am quite sure the change from pentatonic to major was a deliberate one. I am sure they wanted to "rock it up" and move it away from fairly standard blues and berrychucking Stones. I am sure Jagger or Richards suggested the change, and that Taylor followed by changing his lead lines from pentatonic to major.

By the way, it is fantastic the Stones finally started releasing stuff from the vaults, but thus version does leave much to desire. It is a bit half-baked, and there's not really much interesting going on. One might even call it a bit boring.

Oh come on, Mathjis, this is the BEST version ever, and you know it.

Very nice to get something from the vaults. But let's not get carried away. It's an unfinished sketch of the final product.

I am rather sure that the best version is the one on album. I think it is the phenomenon of hearing something new and fresh in way too familiair tune that makes the impression of sounding like the best ever. If the now released version would have been in the original album and they would release the original released version NOW, we would be heaven now and asking what did they were thinking in 1972...

But I have to say that I find the earlier (?) acoustic version more interesting than this one (perhaps because it more far away from the finally released version)... Here is still some reminscant of it, especially in Jagger's delivery. Interesting to follow the conversation here concerning its scale.

I'm dying to hear more! It has been a fascinating period Rolling Stones fanwise!

Well, they clearly knew they had to define and make the melody stronger. So someone, probably Mick, has sat and worked on that melody.

??.....we already have the"final product"...so why can't we "get carried away"
with the "unfinished sketch"?? unfinished works that show the growth of the songs are
extremely interesting (to most of us).

funny how people hope and wish for things from the vault..and then
when they are officially released....are now content with the finished song. i appreciate
alternate takes and all bootlegged material.

Keith likes to say that certain songs are siblings of other songs....according to Keith, what
songs are siblings to ALL DOWN THE LINE?

don't know...but usually the "sibling" songs are very similar musically. ADTL & ST might be
similar musically (especially alternates) but both have train imagery too....so that might justify dropping one
from a setlist.

Sounds liek a song that can be played a lot of different ways.

Absolutely. Plus, "All Down The Line" is one of the regular standarts in Jaggers pre-show warmup sessions with Chuck, and THAT version - just Jagger vocals and Chuck piano - is ABSOLUTE KILLER.

They should send Mick to Greece. Surely he would sort out the finances there.... Cheap SOB!

The album version is much, much better. This sounds like an early draft for the original. When the Stones recorded it on EOMS, they finally settled on the correct version, probably after many attempts to get it right. This version sucks.
