Heart of Stone

Just prior to the guitar solo, I think around 1:03-1:07 Mick says something in the background. Is it a key change call or is it Mick saying "Keith" to do the solo? Any other ideas?

IDK, but thanks for mentioning this oft-forgotten treasure.

I know I've read somewhere that the guitar solo (at the original from 1964) was played by Jimmy Page. Is that correct?

Great song, another 60s gem that doesn't get much live treatment but would be a crowd pleaser I think.

Not quite. Jimmy Page did perform the solo on the ALO Orchestra version though.

The Stones rendition features Keith on lead.

i was impressed when I learned that Jagger/Richards wrote this song. It sounds like a soul cover.

The Jewels - Hearts Of Stone
Rudy Jackson/Edward Ray

Hearts made of stone will never break
’cause your love is never there they just don’t care
You can ask and plea, please.. please.. please work
And all your love is there to stay

These hearts of stone will cause you pain
Although you love there has stopped just the same
You can ask and plea, please, please, please work
And all your love is there to stay
But they’ll say no..no..no...no...no...no...
Your daddy knows I thought I knew hearts made of stone

Hearts made of stone will never break
’cause your love is never there, they just don’t care
You can ask and plea, please, please, please work
And all your love is there to stay
Cause they’ll say no..no..no...no...no...no...
Your daddy knows I thought I knew hearts made of stone

.......................................................

First cut in mid 1954 by the obsure vocal group The Jewels
for the tiny Hollywood R and B label....Soon after picked up and
turned into a number one hit in 1955 by The Charms on the DeLuxe label ...

Once rumoured to have been recorded by Elvis at one
of the Sun sessions but no evidence of this has ever surfaced.....
Although there is proof Presley did perform it live at least once on The Louisiana Hayride in 1955...

Not quite. Jimmy Page did perform the solo on the ALO Orchestra version though.

The Stones rendition features Keith on lead.

And to add: the Stones version is the Now! version, while the Metamorphosis version is the Orchestra version (which has Jim Sullivan and Jimmy Page on guitar, John Paul Jones on bass, Clem Cattini on drums).

And who's on backing vocals? Wasn't it 2 or 3 of The Hollies?

So the question goes out again. What is brief Mick line just before the solo?

Keith admits to copying Page's lead break note for note on the all Stones version(so I hear) but who played the steel guitar break before Page did his lead on the Metamorphosis track?

Hey Rockman, I have this compilation a friend of mine made of Number One Hits and it has Hearts of Stone by the Fontaine Sisters as a number one hit 1955... Perhaps its a mistake, Some of the songs were downloaded and there can be bad info about songs when theyre downloaded.

That steel guitar actually is Big Jim Sullivan, whose style in those days was emmulating a steel guitar. There's several more tracks on Metamorphisis with what seems like steel guitar bends, but it's all Big Jim.

Big Jim Sullivan was a great guitarist and the no 1 before Page gradually took over.

I often wonder what other tracks on Metamorphisis feature the two of them. It'd be great to finally get some clarity on that.

I don't prefer Pages solo to Keith's on Heart Of Stones, but I love the sloppiness of the former. Most of Pages best solo's circa '64 and '65 were incredibly raw and messy - yet utterley brilliant.
