SHatterED live or studio

Shattered is so great on the studio recording... but they just never seem to nail it live.
I don't think I've ever heard them use that wacky phase sound on the guitar live.

Studio by a mile.

That wacky phase sound is what makes it so great and unique.

Shattered is classic stones. I like both. Some great versions on Handsome Girls...but yeah there is something so funky and kinky with the studio version. The backing vocals are like chants from the undead. It reminds me a lot of the backing vocals on the Chant of the Every Circling Skeletal Family...simply wonderful. One of their perfectly crafted songs. Driving Keith Riff, hard sharp snare, tight compact leads, rapping Jagger in full furry, and subliminal textures from all the other "unheard" instruments layered throughout the production. Full on Glimmer from the twins! Perfect!

Shattered is a weak song in my oppinion. Some liveversions were entertaining at least. I do not understand why it stayed on the setlist for such a long time.

Shattered from Hampton -simply one of the best four minutes of live Stones available. Utterly fantastic.

Tricky question!

I simply love Shatettered in all its incarnations.

Live it has that different riff that is a fantastic addition to the studio version.

Studio version is just the perfect speed with a killer groove. Live at times it is played slightly too fast.

this is not a song musically.

mick makes or breakks this "song" with his performance.

i think he is better in the studio, like everyone.

This one? Great performance, yep.

I think they almost lost the groove for an instant right at the start of the bridge...

Don't YOU think that it doesn't quite capture to brilliance of the original?

Sorry Mathijs but Mick's voice is god awful on that one. I much prefer the 78 versions.

Best live version was the Voodoo tour. With wacky phase and a properly played bridge (unlike the Bang tour version). Great song, musically it's very interesting - the bridge is fantastic. Studio version is stellar but I like the Voodoo tour version/performance of it the best.

I'm with Mathijs and also reckon it sounds better than Still Life. The Phoenix 81 version is pretty top too!

Like the song very much.
Hampton ยด81 is a real fantastic one,the Handsome Girls ones are pretty rough
but great as well,almost...

im not fussed about the studio version.

its a bit one paced and dosent inspire me.

the still life version is great though, jagger really has the crowd on edge right the way through, and the guitar solos are great too.

If someone asks me if there is a Ronnie solo I like, I think of this song. It is effective and it works, such as it is. Fun song, fun performance, if you like or are in the mood for that stuff.

did a nice rave-up on this in '81 - but it's been basically an embarrassment on the stage on subsequent tours. great studio track...

I remember hearing the first riffs of Shattered when purchasing a New Jersey 1994 bootleg in late 1994...sounded really good; then suddenly "the choir" - Bernard and Lisa - bounced in with that slick "shattered - shattered"-thingy....couldn't believe that they were allowed to ruin the song like that

I think the best live versions of Shattered are the ones from 1978...especially the Memphis version. But 1981/1982 are also great
Though, just like Rocks Off, it's hard to measure the live takes to the definitive version....which is the official release

Lexington '78 is lovely as is, Hampton '81, Tempe '81, Philly '89 [the best], and New Jersey '94 (aside from the small screw up from Ronnie).

The studio version is pretty perfect.

I still look forward to live versions but performing it has been hit or miss. The ABB version was never as great as when they played it on the VL tour...great guitar work by Ronnie. Today, Ronnie plays the bridge with chords and not the solo...WTF??

Still though...Mick usually does a good job with it even still.
