Who do the Stones Listen to?
Posted by: Harlem Shuffler ()

The only two people outside the band that I can think of that the Stones took notice of are Ian Stewart and Anita (or so I once read) as far as musical, rather than technical, quality was concerned. I'm not talking about influences such as Muddy Waters etc. but rather someone who would stand up to them and tell them if what they were doing was below the required standard.
Is there anyone in the Stones' camp these days that they have the same respect for?

Don't know who'd be able to stand up to them. I doubt anyone...they wouldn't even care much if members within the own band criticized them. They might listen to Charlie though. Definitely no one outside the Stones themselves would be able to get through to them. They'll still do what they want, how they want to do it.

And to give a real answer...

If it concerns studio-work or writing songs, the internal collaboration between the Glimmers or, one scale larger, the band has proven to result in the most effective and productive feedback. (I wonder how much discussion in this form there's left in this modern era.)

Live, I'm quite sure the many participants in creating the show have a lot of input and even a bit influence on the eventual performance. They all advise Mick from their discipline (stage design, lights, sound engeneers etcetera). Mick coordinates, weighs, chooses and decides from his point of view as manager/frontman/show centrepoint, but I'm sure some of the crews advises eventually result in subtle or less subtle chances we can actually experience. But Í really cannot give an example, it's just an idea...

They must listen to their own compilations and go Wow, that's a great album, we should play those songs on tour.

So that's why we get the Hot Rocks/Licks set lists...because they listen to those albums and nothing else....

I remember years ago Ringo Starr was on the Arsinio Hall Show and said that he was listening to The Cramps. I almost fell off the couch.

There was that free CD with Uncut Magazine a few years back that was said to be Keef's hand picked favorites. I've got a lot of miles out of that disc. It has a little bit of everything.

As far as I know Mick didn't like Anita's kinda "influence" at all. At least not at first....

I think Chuckie L. has a big influence, live as well in the studio.
But if this is a good influence, I don't know...... ;-)

... it's no big deal, of course, but Harlem Shuffler might get more relevant replies
if he/she changed the title of the thread to "who do the Stones take advice from".

Who do they take advice from...
They used to listen to Prince Rupert. But not anymore... (I heard he suffered a stroke, but have not been able to have this confirmed.)
They still listen to Michael Cohl a lot.
Mick listens to Torje Eike, the nutrition and physical training expert, who's also his physiotherapist. And to L'wren when it comes to fashion tips. And their Dutch fiscal advisors.
Keith listens to his own heart, and to Patricia. And Blondie and Charlie.
Charlie listens to Keith when it comes to music, Mick when it comes to design and economy. And to Polish horse breeders!
Ronnie listens to - not sure any more... confused smiley

They all listen to Mick when it comes to the planning of tours, infrastructure, design, which towns to play etc.

I assumed that the question was about what music/ musicians they listen to. But I must admit I don't know what the question actually is.

>> I assumed that the question was about what music/ musicians they listen to <<

yeah, a lot of people clearly think that, but if you read the first post,
what he/she is asking is whose opinion matters to them:
"someone who would stand up to them and tell them if what they were doing was below the required standard"
like i said, it's no big deal - just that familiar phenomenon of people reading only the headlines,
and in this case the title of the thread is very easy to misunderstand unless you read the post.

Oooh, was I supposed to read that first one? Once again, assuming has made an ass out of me. Dagnmammit that happens to me all too often!

But honestly, with my last post I was going to make the argument that (in their hearts) the Stones listen to the musicians that they listen to, but that' seems a little too much like an argument that swallowed its own tail. Still, I think there's some truth to it.
