OT The World Cup Soccer 2010 South Africa Thread

Just a few months to go.....the fever slowly starts....which team is your favourite? What are your predictions? Who will be the star of this event? Are you going to South Africa? Do you have tickets? Or do you watch the game at home with friends and lots of good rock&roll and cold beers?

Favourite: Holland and Serbia
Predictions: final Holland - Argentina
Star: Lionel Messi / Klaas-Jan Huntelaar

A bit early!

We (Northern Ireland) didnt qualify despite a creditable effort (no surprise) so I'll be watching it at home.

Pity the tournament seems to be so out of reach for regular fans, ticket-wise.

England will never have a better chance to win the World Cup again, now that they have an excellent coach.

Hard to see past Spain, however. The only genuinely top quality side in international football at present.

Yes a bit early....so we do have some time for predictions etc, and to create some atmosphere....And how could I forget about Spain? The team of Carlito from Tenerife! We will see.

We Americans might have something to say about that first.

Unfortunately, Germany will win the Cup.
Why? One might argue
that Argentina isn't what it was,
that England will fail when it comes to penalty shoot-out,
that Brazil isn't dominant any more as they didn't start well in it's qualifications,
that Italy and France are not half as good as four years ago,
that Spain seems to be the obvious choice but that will be the reason why they will fail and so on.
I might ague
that Germany is always good in the course of a tournament,
that Germany is favoured by the lot (tougher teams later on in the tournament).
No, it's Mathematics!
Give a guess.

It's awesome living in South Africa now, except I'm not going to see even one game. Sad eh? But it'll be cool to see all the excitement and foreigners around here. They'll probably all get mugged at least once, this is South Africa you know! but I still reckon the tournament will be a success.

I love world cup fever!

I would be thrilled if England were to win it, but given that our FIFA ranking fluctuates between 6 & 10, I think that we will make the quarter finals and no more. The potential loss of Ashley Cole from defence will be a blow but we have adequate cover defensively. We'll miss Cole's attacking threat. Rooney is in the form of his life and could really illuminate the world stage.

I think that Spain will win it with Argentina beaten in the final. The Italians, Dutch and Brazilians will progress well too.

Not going this time around - I get married on 26 June.

Before then I have a cup final with my beloved Aston Villa on the 28th February and hopefully another visit to Wembley for a final come May!

Aren't the Stones meant to tour during World Cups? winking smiley I thought they were contractually obliged to!

Spain and Argentina can't meet in the final if they win their groups - they will play before and the winner will be in the final
Sorry, forgot the Dutch - beautiful football but a bit like England when it comes to major championships.
But to repeat: no skills this time, it's Mathematics.

Ahh thanks for that JJHMick! I've not followed the fixture route yet!

Spain were always like the Dutch when it came to major tournaments but they broke this jinx with their victory at Euro 2008. Perhaps the Dutch could follow suit.

I am not that patriotic (except for the German women's team...), especially as they arely play the "best" football. As I have studied English at university my sympathies are with England or better said, basically "European". Regarding favourites for te title, 4 years ago I thought it would be Brazil vs. Argentina in the final and the Europeans being humiliated but it turned into the opposite!
Therefore, this time it's Maths...

England won’t win. Along with Holland, they're the great underachievers of international football. We have some fabulous players - though, no goalkeepers! -, but, IMO, we'll reach the knockout stages and probably bail out on penalties, as usual.

I hope that Germany will win, as I know that if England fails the broad majority of the English people and media will support Germany passionately! It would be nice too if Maradona and his boys would win. Anyway, it will be thrilling!

...Most likely to win (the all-round favorites): Spain.
...the ones I'm supporting (ànd have a fair chance of winning too, imo): England.
...most likely outsider: USA.
...Surely in semi-finals: at least one African nation. (Ivory Coast, I reckon; not the most briliant team alltogether, but they've got the n° 1 striker in the world, these days.)

Forza Football!

I'm with you Gaz, as much as I want England to win, Spain look too good- but they always do have the under achiever tag!

I'm England all the way. If they don't win with Capello in charge, they'll never win.

At the same time I hope Germany gets knocked out in the group stage.

And regarding windmelody, have you learned nothing from history?
