I think this thread proves that the Stones have had 2-3 gems on every album, even recent ones. Even if nobody can agree what they are. grinning smiley

.....The Worst....the harmonies...love Mick's backing vox... the simplicity.....the sincerity of the song....good stuff.

I second that-
ànd the "Laugh I nearly died"-votes too.
And thumbs up for "Rough Justice" (nothing is EVER stereotypical about any good, honest, straightforward rocker, imo- that would be a contradiction in terms.)
And I'd like to light a candle here for "This place is empty".

...Anybody mentioned "Streets of Love", or maybe "Biggest Mistake" yet??! cool smiley

Saint of Me (definitely)

Laugh I Nearly Died (possibly, wish they'd improved the in-tuneness of the vocals on the early part of the chorus though)

I haven't seen anyone mention " Don't Stop " .

Perhaps it was overlooked because it was released on 40 Licks ?

Gazza
By 'great', I mean a 5-star gem.

Post-Exile:

GHS - Winter
IORR - IORR, Fingerprint File, Time Waits For No One
Black & Blue - Memory Motel
Some Girls - Miss You, Just My Imagination, Before They Make Me Run, Beast Of Burden, Shattered, Everything is Turning To Gold (b side)
Emotional Rescue - Where The Boys Go, If I Was a Dancer (from Suckin in the 70s)
Tattoo You - Slave, Worried About You, Tops, Waiting On A Friend
Undercover - none. Title track comes close as does Feel on Baby.
Dirty Work - none. Sleep Tonight comes closest.
Steel Wheels - Continental Drift, Almost hear You Sigh. Slipping Away is close.
Voodoo Lounge - None. Thru & thru maybe. Out of Tears is a near classic.
Bridges - Out of Control, Thief In The Night, Saint of Me, How Can I Stop
ABB - Laugh I Nearly Died (just about).

Those are all very good, but not great. Fingerprint File and Shattered are nearly great.

Tatters - i disagree I believe most of the songs Gazza posted are great though I think there are more of them. Start Me Up to me is the last Great single.

The very last - but only very good- song was Laugh I nearly died.

But I found Already over me a really great song! And there were a few very good ones on Bridgres to Babylon!

Laugh I nearly Died.

Mick at his absolute best.

A Beautiful soulful song which if had been performed by modern artists would have been deemed a 'classic'.

I've tried to make my own list. It's not easy!

GHS - 100 years ago (no doubt about it); Winter (great ballad)
IORR - Time Waits For No One (of course); Short and curlies, a semi-gem.
Black & Blue - None
Some Girls - None
Emotional Rescue - Down in the hole, a semi-gem (they actually were deep down in a big hole then)
Tattoo You - No use in crying, a semi-gem
Undercover - None
Dirty Work - None (not because of Jagger's barking or shouting)
Steel Wheels - Mixed emotions, a semi-gem; Break the spell (because of its special atmosphere)
Voodoo Lounge - Out of tears (dubious)
Bridges - Out of control
ABB - Biggest mistake, a semi-gem.

GHS and IORR and the last four albums contain some nice songs (though IORR's title song is horrible), but real gems are hard to find.
