ringing guitar in Rain Fall Down - who is playing it?
Posted by: PiotrRSpl ()

This is mystery to me - who is playing this ringing sounds on Rain Fall Down live? Obviously Mick is acting like he does - but he doesn't, he adds "wwhacha whacha' sort of sounds to fill the background nicely. Sometimes it looks like Ronnie is playing it, the other times it's clear it's not him. Sometimes it looks like Keith, but than there are clear moments when you hear it and Keith is certainly not playing it. So who does? Are they exchanging it? Sometimes Ronnie, sometimes Keith? That would be hard to co-operate, I know it's the Stones we are talking about, but still I don't see Ronnie & Keith giving each other any messages "now you're playing it". Seen them performing live, seen DVD's from tour and it's still mystery to me.

that's what I thought, but it must be quite hard to coordinate and they always get it right. The other mystery about this song is WHY THE HELL it was dropped from the setlist? On European tour they only played it in Vienna and I was lucky to hear it. There is totally no reason not to play this song - it's their single, it was played on radio quite a lot in Europe, people loves the song, it has mdoern feeling to it, you can dance to it and most definately it works live in 100%! Guitar interplay is priceless on it! Bring it back for UK and Bergen and Horsens !

first of all I was asking about live performance and not the studio version. Second, Ronnie actually plays guitar on studio track. Third, Ronnie was NOT in rehab during recording of ABB.

I read in the gossip page 'Page 6' of the New York Post that it is Chuch Leavell playing it!!

I agree that RFD is great live, Streets of Love is a corny song, cut it the Lyrics of RFD are cool and I wish they would emrace ABB and play more of it.

well, this is quite possible it is Chukc playing it from his keyboards. I just never look at this guy with all respect, but there's much better things to look at !

And yes I must admit Streets Of Love live is outstanding and night by night there are playingit better and better. Last time I saw them in Stuttgart, Mick simply outdone himself at the end ("everybody shout @#$%& out!!)
BTW, in Milan and Vienna Keith played electric, than he started to play acoustic on this one (I loved to hear him putting bluesy licks on SOL in Vienna).

It is obviously a tape that plays the "ringing guitar". But the next question is; who recorded the guitar on the tape? My guess is Mick, it sounds like him.

I've seen it played twice, in the US, and both times Mick's guitar was as audible as Keith's or Ron's...That may not be the case in Europe, as arrangements and mix have changed over the course of the tour - as for example Start Me Up when placed as opener in Boston, 8/05, Keith dominated and Ron was barely audible to me except during the brief solo. Six months later Ron was up front mix-wise & on fire with bluesy fills (& a blisterting solo) thru the entire song.

Mick is starting the song with this lick and gets support from Blondie Chaplin, who plays it when Mick is dancing around. They are both up in the mix.

If it was from the tape than coordinating it to come in the right time would be hard and also what makes it impossible to be a tape is that it sounds different and not the same all of the time.

well this depends on the venue and how the sounds is set in stadium/arena.People in other parts of the venue might hear Ronnie and Keith up front, while Ronnie was not audible.

that's what I thought at first...BUT...if you watch the DVD's sometimes you can hear ring tone and see Ronnie is playing something different, am I right...?

If you are talking about the opening lick, it is Mick. No tape recording and no Chuck. Have seen and heard it several times from up front.

me too. Ring tone is NOT coming from Mick during the song. So are Ronnie'n'Keith exchanging it? This seems like the only explanation. For sure it is not the tape. How do you know it's not Chuck? I also saw it from up front, but only once.

Your all wrong. It's actually Charlie who played it in the studio for Bigger Bang (Charlie is great on guitar). Ronnie was on drums, Keith was on keyboards, Lisa, Bernard also on guitar and chuck was controlling the sound board. Mick was not there during the recording. He was auditioning as an extra for a reunion episode of FRIENDS. If you listen to the studio version very closely, it's actually Blonde doing a great job of sounding like Mick.

<If it was from the tape than coordinating it to come in the right time would be hard and also what makes it impossible to be a tape is that it sounds different and not the same all of the time.>

Not if Chuck does the programming, and plays it on his keyboard. I´vé listend numerous times on several shows with headphones, and I clearly hear all three guitars playing, but not the ringing guitar lick. Sometimes Keith and Ronnie plays a simliar lick, but the ringing guitar is still there - check it out yourself. My guess is a canned track, as they did with Rock And A Hard Place earlier...

It is Chuck, no question!

PiotrRSpl, you are certainly right in your response to my comment about venue and place within venue, but my (muddled) point was that on visual & aural evidence the guitarists played the song differently - at the earlier shows RW played tentatively and sometimes not at all during SMU, with KR dominating...and later was playing throughout...And I can imagine Mick as perhaps concentrating on gtr at earlier shows (his rhythm playing was very crisp & clear at 2 shows I attended on RFD) - and perhaps he got more interested in the performance aspect, and so the sound was filled in by whomever...It worked great live & I'd not mind it again in September, with 5 or 6 others from ABB.

thanks for the chuckle JRG !
in fact Ronnie received a cure for the blues, he plays it in studio la fourchette and Taylor hidden backstage was hired to play the ringing guitar

Just having a little fun with it. It's actually one of my favorate tunes from Bigger Bang. I did watch them play it live in Fresno last November and was curious on the guitar part. I thought Ronnie and Mick were playing it, but was too far up in the nose bleed seats that I really could not tell. I'll be at the MGM in Las Vegas on November 11th. I have better seats in a venue of only 14,000. Fresno was also only 16,000. Anyone else going to Vegas.

You got proof of this, or are you intentionally being a jerk?

Just look at the Rio video -- Mick, Ronnie and Keith are all playing guitar.

This is one of the best Q's I've ever seen on here - glad you asked this PiotrRSpl! I've been wondering the same thing. And I'm impressed that we've got the answer boiled down to: all of them, one of them, two of them, Chuck, a tape recording of ?, Mick, Blondie, Ronnie, Ronnie & Keith weaving it, or --- Charlie!

Mick starts it, and then Ronnie and Keith weave throughout.
Keith has some killer blues licks, perfectly timed.
And Daryl has finally found his bass-playing voice in the Stones with this song.
He's one funky bassist!

<You got proof of this, or are you intentionally being a jerk?>

I'm just a guitar player with headphones - you should listen carefully too...

It's true as many here says that Ronnie and Keith also is playing the lick, but it's easy to hear that it sounds different when they touch into it. The main lick IS programmed...
