Opinions on Metamorphosis tracks

I'd like to know what people think of the outtakes on Metamorphosis.

Personally, I like 3-4 tunes. That's it.

I like:

I Don't Know Why
Jiving Sister Fanny
I'm Going Down
Family
Downtown Suzie
Don't Lie To Me
Memo From Turner
Heart Of Stone

The rest is utter bollocks, imo.

If You Let Me is great and underrated.

mostly, they suck.
the whole band is featured on only half of the tracks, the rest are demos with studio musicians...cover art sucks too. what a wasted opportunity.

i dont know why
jiving sister fanny
i'm going down
downtown susie
don't lie to me

those are the ones I can listen to

all the mick & co. demos from what? 1964? are unlistenable to me.

i like these songs

Jiving Sister Fanny
I'm Going Down
I Don't Know Why
If You Let Me
Family
Downtown Suzie
Don't Lie To Me
Memo From Turner
Out Of Time
Sleepy City
Heart of Stone

they could of made a much better album if they'd used some more of the tracks that were on Necrophilia

Andrew's Blues
Pay Your Dues
Have You Seen Your Mother Baby
Blue Turns To Grey
Good Times

I think they may have had some difficulty getting 'Andrew's Blues' cleared for release, somehow...

From Wikipedia:

"After the release of Hot Rocks 1964–1971 in 1971, an album entitled Necrophilia was compiled for release as the follow-up, with the aid of Andrew Loog Oldham, featuring many previously unreleased (or, more accurately, discarded) outtakes from the Rolling Stones' Decca/London period. While that project failed to materialize—with More Hot Rocks (Big Hits & Fazed Cookies) being released in its place—most of the unreleased songs were held over for a future project. In 1974, in order to give it an air of authority, Bill Wyman involved himself in compiling an album he entitled Black Box. However, Allen Klein wanted more Mick Jagger/Keith Richard songs in the project for monetary reasons, and Wyman's version remained unreleased. Metamorphosis was issued in its place."

When compared to Odds & Sods by the Who (which came out 9 months earlier) it's a joke. Odds & Sods is a legit rarities album. Interestingly, it was compiled (like the Black Box) by the bass player of the band (John Entwistle).

Metamorphosis, I rarely listen to...it's like a crappy bootleg that you listen to once (besides the 5-6 decent songs on it).

THis is the original track list of Bill according to Ian Carr Illustrated Record (ca. 1977):
1) Bright Lights Big City
2) Cops And Robbers
3) I'd Much Rather Be With The Boys
4) Little Red Rooster (live)
5) Down The Road Apiece (live)
6) Let's Talk It Over (= Don't Lie To Me)
7) If You Let Me
8) Godzi
9) Panama Powder Room
10) Gold Painted Nails
11) Fanny Mae
12) Meet Me In The Bottom

Simply said:
Alan Klein's Metamorphosis has more Jagger/Richards songs on it. Don't interpret J/R songs as a nice gesture to the two but actually meaning more Abkco copyright songs. Which means more money for the Alan B Klein Corporation...
Alan Klein originally had a live version of Satisfaction on hand but could be persuaded to add 7 + Heart Of Stone version on Metamorphosis.
Only 3, 6 + 7 of Bill's proposal made it on Metamorphosis
1, 2 + 10 might be known to you as early BBC radio live tunes. But if it's indicated that 4 + 5 are live then there must be studio recordings of 1, 2 + 10!

I agree with that track list...the rest is pretty crap, IMO

All by all it is still much better then the crap they have released ever since 1986

I like it but don't listen to it very often. It has a certain charm to it. It beats Dirty Work!

I think I am the only person that really enjoys listening to this record. It has some of my all-time favorite Stones songs on there. like some people said, I'd probably rather listen to this than 'Dirty Work' - or even 'Steel Wheels' for that matter.

Too much Andrew Oldham orchestra as opposed to Stones, but otherwise a good collection. Love I'm Going Down. Wish they had put Cops & Robbers on it.

these are the 2 best IMO:

i dont know why
jiving sister fanny

And I like:

don't lie to me

Re: Opinions on Metamorphosis tracks

Good songs on Metamorphosis :

1) I'm Going Down ( The longer unofficial mix may be better, though. )

2) Heart of Stone ( alternate version )

3) Out of Time ( alternate version )

4) Don't Lie to Me ( cover )

5) Try a Little Harder

6) I Don't Know Why I Love You ( cover )

7) Jiving Sister Fanny

8) Walking Through the Sleepy City ( sounds almost like a holiday song )

So that's 8 of 16 but two of those 8 are alternate versions of songs that appear on earlier albums & another two are covers.

I seem to remember a song called "Er, Um Er" on the album when it was first released. Am I confusing this with something else?
