Throwing towels to the band
Posted by: dead.flowers ()

I wonder if I got this right.

During the 2007 European Tour I noted that, while the band were on the small stage, people kept throwing towels at the band members who then flung them back into the crowd.

Is the idea behind this to obtain a souvenir that's been touched by the idol? Or that he's even used to mop up his sweat with?

lingerie, t-shirts, towels, joints, packs of cigarettes for Keith -
smile: in the Saitama footage there's a rather amusing incident of that.

Mick makes it so clear that he dislikes having stuff thrown at him (and no wonder!)
that it really puzzles me that people do it anyway. i know i know: "but mine is special! it's a GIFT!"
except that to him it's just a missile.

Yeah, WE know that, but the rest of the masses don't.

Imagine the loads of bras & panties that would end up on the stage if they announced beforehand: "Do not throw your underwear at Mick!"

It seems that the quality of the missiles has improved though.

wasn't it a chair, or part of, in Milano '66?

>> wasn't it a chair, or part of, in Milano '66? <<

you mean Marseilles 66, where Mick's eye got cut? [passing popcorn]
or MSG 72, where Mick yelled at people for throwing bottles at him,
or the Anaheim Shoe Show in 78, or Toronto Rocks 03, where video history was made :E

lingerie, t-shirts, towels, joints, packs of cigarettes for Keith ....

and what is the expectation?

lingerie?? - "oh...i think i'll sniff it. or if it's new...maybe it would fit my Russian girlfriend."

t-shirts?? - "oh....i love the graphic....I think I'll wear it. thank god cuz I can't afford my own clothing."

towels?? - "really? is this from the hotel? don't they know the only valuable sweat is from Elvis or James Brown?"

joints & cigarettes?? - ???? "let's stop the show and share a smoke together." (??)

Maybe Mick's just happy it's not another shoe.
But seriously...what do people expect when they throw stuff up there.
If the towel/sweat theory is correct...why?...and what is the likelihood that you will get it back?

The only things they might take interest in..... bouquet of flowers / flag from host country / $$$$$$$$$

actually Keith and Ronnie are both quite kind about accepting the gifts -
it's Mick who kicks/hurls them back into the crowd

when it's not an effort to offer a gift, though, i guess it's sometimes
a giddy/ thoughtless "can i get their attention" sort of thing
and/or just the athletic challenge of "can i throw this thing that far" eye rolling smiley

Oops, wrong country - but at least the City name starts with M...
note to self: check that coffee, it ain't working.

I wonder what drives those people.
is it: "I love you so much, I need to throw my chair at you" ?

yes...keith & ronnie are more polite about "accepting gifts".

i haven't seen the Saitama footage that you referenced...is it
more than just Mick throwing and kicking stuff back into the crowd??
I've seen that often (by Mick) but never interpreted as "dislike"...just
acting the part of the rock&roll rebel a bit. And just think if he did
pretend to keep every little trinket....fans would see that as a green light
to throw more and more stuff to him (or at him)...

have you seen Mick actually get angry about this?? obviously there;s
a difference between someone throwing a teddy bear..and a shoe.

over the years Mick has done a great job of avoiding, deflecting and
sometimes catching thrown objects.

yes, Mick often looks visibly annoyed as he dodges stuff, and/or hurls or kicks it out of the way.
and yelling at everybody: "don't throw your friggin bottles at me!" is not exactly an indicator that he doesn't mind.
maybe he's a bit more mellow about it now than he was in the 70s/80s/90s, though

the Saitama footage includes Keith good-naturedly shielding himself against a shower of cigarette packs -
which he then collects from the stage and piles up on the drum riser, along with a bunch of scarves and what-not.
he is kind about the fans' wish to give him something. even it's just a foolish rag-like token, he sees that it's love

but is it also Saitama where Ronnie is just bending over to pick up a piece of lingerie
when the Mick grabs his belt and drags him away, and then kicks the item off the stage?
i forget which ABB show that was ... maybe there was some reason for it, but it seemed ... mean.

ps just pondering the decades of dodging what people are throwing at/to you -
all kinds of love and joy and blessings on the Rolling Stones, for good

I would never never throw something on the stage (except myself grinning smiley ) for fear of bothering the musicians while they are playing ,I think it's a luck of respect but to be honest ,one of my "Stones fantasy "is to obtain a towel that Mick would have already make use of .

Some more months left to think about how I could get it ...

I am a Frenchie ,as Mick affectionately called them in the Old Grey Whistle Test in 1977 .

Looking at the subject from a complete different point of view......

Things that the guys throw off the stage......some that immeadiatly come to mind are (apart from the stuff Mick throws back!!!!) water bottles, towels, drum-sticks....and cigarett butts - YUK!!!!

At a gig in Prague once, I was in the front row - at one point Keith threw his burning cigarett off the stage and it landed right in front of me, a few centimeters in front of the barrier.
And guess what???? There were people everywhere throwing themselves into the direction of the discarded ciggie-butt to try and grab it!
Shouting at the security guy to pick it up and give it to them!!!!
He made a funny face BUT actually did pick (between two fingers, may I add) it up in the end to hand it to two 'lucky' guys next to me who where so happy, you'd think they'd won the lottery!!!

And if anyone wondered confused smiley .....it was a Marlboro Menthol....

PS - anyone been lucky enough to been hit by a drum-stick, I wonder??????

On the B-stage, I once threw a t-shirt I wanted Ronnie to have:

I flung it on stage on his side...don't think he saw it but a roadie came and collected it. Would have been nice if I saw him wear it later, though!

back in '99 when i was naive, i bought flowers and tossed them at mick. they hit him on the lower legs/feet. he was startled but smiled (not at me - he didn't see where they came from) and gave them to lisa...

keith doesn't seem the menthol type, by the way...

It's understandable Mick would discourage the crowd throwing things on stage. Encouraging that kind of behavior can let things get out of hand. Next thing you know, Naked women (beautiful of course) will crowd surf their way onto the stage. Hum? Maybe a little encouragement would not hurt after all (tee, hee!).
