Nils Lofgren and his song about Keith.

I`ve just read in a book by Victor Bokris about this song, "Keith don`t go", being "unfortunate but well-meaning". I understand why "well-meaning" - but what does it mean, "unfortunate"? Keith got angry or what?

I don't understand the use of unfortunate either. It was released during Keith's drug travails in Toronto in 1977 as I recall. Not a bad song either. Maybe Keith didn't dig it.

ChrisM,
There`s still a chance, Bokris just meant the song did not become a hitsmiling smiley

Bokris says, Lofgren wrote the song even earlier, in 1975 - but all the same, it was already possible to ask Keith not to go then...

Ah, Ok. Perhaps Nils was worried that Keith would pop his clogs. Thanks for the reminder!

Both Nils and Steven Van Zandt are huge Stones fans. Of course, Nils wrote the song long before he became a member of the E Street Band, but the tribute was honest and well-meaning.

i think Bockris meant the song expresses a lame and highly unStones-like sentiment.

Nils wrote the song c.1974 and it was written for his brilliant 1975 album, called Nils, because at the time Keith was famously on short odds of ODing because of his heroin addiction. It was a plea from a fan to his "main inspirer" "all the way from the USA". When Nils toured the UK in 1977 (after Keith's Toronto bust) Nils would sing 'Keith don't go, up to Toronto'. There may well be film of this from Nils' Old Grey Whistle Test concert from this time.

Ah, yes, on the page the second link from Rolling Hansie above leads to, there`s a story told by Nils himself.Thank you!

Yes,the sentiment seems unStones, with sssoul, and breaking into too private space.Though art is often tactless and merciless...I believe it`s hard to become its object.

I think Nils wrote the song because he heard a rumour in 1974 or 75 that Keith wanted to quit The Rolling Stones.

Actually, the title of his first post-Grin 1975 album was Nils Lofgren

Worth mentioning, because in 1979 he put out an album titled simply "Nils" which includes some songs he co-wrote with Lou Reed. Lou included some other songs they wrote together on his "The Bells" album that same year.

Here's one of my favorite Nils tunes, originally on his 1976 "Cry Tough" LP

The song is truly lame and would not even get a mention if it didn't mention Keith.

no one thinks it's a putdown - it's just embarrassingly lame.
(the "to Toronto" version is even lamer than the original, along with being crass.)

sorry! i've really been trying not to add anything, since it seems some people enjoy this tune,
but it just came bursting out.

I remember a KR quote at the time about the song.. something like "they should worry about themselves" meaning people who thought he was going to 'go'

This thread is beginning to become an epic. What other songs about Keith have there been?
