8-track Stones

in the early 80's i got my first taste of the classic stones albums on 8-track tapes given to me or bought at yard sales. hot-rocks, sticky fingers, exile on main street, goats head soup to name a few. as i got older i could get to record shops easier and get ahold of vinyl and cassette . it's been over 28 yrs but can still remember 100 years ago on 8 track it was split into two sections with the first part fading out after "please excuse me while I hide away" and the second part fading in with "Call me lazy bones" until i bought the lp i thought they were two different songs like dance parts 1&2. with all that being said, how many of you had at least part of their stones beginings with 8-tracks?

I had most of the stones on 8tracks but only for my car.. I hated how many of the songs were split in half but what i loved most about the 8 track was you could leave it in the player and it would just keep on playing while the cassettee you had to turn over

And of course, there were different versions of songs on some 8tracks:

I've certainly said this here before, but 8-Tracks provided a huge part of the soundtrack of my early rock and roll life. Tom Petty, Boston, Earth Wind and Fire. I had a Fischer stereo with turntable, radio, and 8-Track Player. Also, a portable 8-Track player that I kept in the bathroom. My Dad's van had one, too!

Some Girls on 8-Track was my first Stones purchase. I can still hear the "chunk"-ing sound in my head,if I listen really closely.

Oh yeah, I've now bought most of the stuff on 8 track, album, cassette, and CD.

ghostryder..do you still have those 8 tracks? nice collectibles.

considering the "chunking" sound and potential for tape to unravel
or get caught up in the player....i'm surprised 8tracks caught on.

remind me....did 8 tracks precede cassette tapes..or did they
come out at the same time?? if they preceded cassettes...then 8tracks
for car stereos is understandable.

IORR............but I like it!

The Sticky Fingers 8-track has an outtake of Sister Morphine. Not a different mix, a different take.

I had a 8-track of IORR and Let IT Bleed.
Sometimes I think they sounded better than the vinyl.
However, during the quiet parts, the other track(s) would bleed through.
During the queit part in Fingerprint FIle, I could hear Ain't To Proud To Beg.
And Love In Vain was an on two different tracks.
"All my love's in vain..." Fade out. Click. "When the train..."

yeah, my uncle bought me 'love you live' so i could hear the stones in his car when i was 11, which i played incessantly. only bad part was program 3 never would run so i never heard the el mocambo side. also, one speaker must have been off, because i never heard both the guitars, i think the right side was off, so i missed most of keith's bits. oh well...he tried!

In my collection of Stones memorabilia I have fifty 8 track tapes that I have picked up over the years . Needless to say there are some duplicates there but most all have a tiny bit of difference as far as the outer shell design . Generally the difference is the labels which were attached and the color of the shell itself . White , black and pink were the most prevalent colors the exception being " Exile " was gray .

I too remember when the songs were split in half as hot stuff mentioned . The one thing I remember most about 8 tracks was that every once in a while the 8 track player would "eat the tape " and you'd have to spend quite a while fiddling around to remove the mess and of course the tape was gone for good . Those were the days .

You know, I'm 28yo and I've never knowingly seen an 8 track.

8 tracks were invented by the designer of the Lear jet (See "Happy" for Stones reference).

Stereo 8, commonly known as the eight-track cartridge, eight-track tape, or eight-track, is a magnetic tape sound recording technology, popular from the mid-1960s to the early 1980s. Stereo 8 was created in 1964 by a consortium led by Bill Lear of Lear Jet Corporation, along with Ampex, Ford Motor Company, General Motors, Motorola and RCA Victor Records (RCA).
