It's interesting how topics like this are shut down by "who are we to judge?" thinking. It IS extreme, and to pretend otherwise--as if she's just getting a new haircut--is dishonest.

I think fear tends to motivate people on topics like this. If one dares say anything critical you run the risk of sounding narrow-minded or even being called "@#$%&" by the most reactionary.

When a public figure--and she has been one, if not by choice, her entire life--has a spokesperson announce this and is met with silence, it scares me.

Because it is the worst effect of a society that is badgered into being "PC." No one wants to touch that new Third Rail, and so our free and open democracy is like the press in Cold War eastern Europe. People won't say what they think is the truth.

Regarding gender reassignment, there was an interesting article in The Atlantic a few months back about whether children who see themselves as the opposite sex should undergo such a process. When you read about those kids--under 5 years old-- who just weren't happy with the way they were born, it broke your heart. It's a complicated issue and it must be discussed rather than met with insecure silence pretending to be sophistication.

I wish Chastity Bono all the best. It's hard to imagine the turmoil a person must feel that leads them to take this huge step. I hope she finds the happiness she is seeking.

good post loog. yes...recognizing the EXTREMENESS of a "sex change" operation
and all that goes with it does not mean one can't be empathetic/sympathetic/understanding
at the same time.

Being anti-PC does not make a person uncaring etc... it merely means they aren't
brainwashed into thinking that everything has to be sugar-coated and nice-nice.

In general...making judgments & assessments about people is healthy.
It's how we protect ourselves and our children.

That being said.....I don't think HB or anybody was making any judgments about Chastity...except that it is an extreme option...which it is.

I didnt accuse hb or anyone else of being judgmental, was just a general statement. For the individual the gender reassignment isnt "extreme" its a correction, something deeply yearned for and sorely needed. The fact that it isnt more widely discussed or understood, the dismissal of the importance of that need and of that understanding is extreme.
