Why was this buried as a B-Side. Should've been on an album.

It's so very lonely, you're 2,000 Light Years from home

Too Beatles-esque?

An absolute classic, great sound(s)!

It´s also the obvious link between psychedelia and "back to the roots".

I'm not betting nothing but for sure it sounds like Mick J

Nicos my hearing must be really bad, I have never even came close to thinking it sounds like mick, Although it probably is.

Do you know what actually is being said I could never make it out?

After listing for 40 years now I don't know ....for me it sounds "Hey babe bla bla bal...........

This is quite possibly my favorite song of all-time. It has great personal meaning to me as well.

A lovely song. Great lyrics, and a brilliant production ... showcases the genius of the Stones and of Jimmy Miller too. Nice, drone-like quality to the melody. A wonderful and mellow flip-side to the full-throttle fury of JJF.

There's a cool inst./outtake version floating around too. I have it on CD somewhere, very nice and a little longer as I remember. Some of it plays during this interview on Youtube, but sounds a little different:

Here's a cheesecake version:

Lastly, a cover (pretty bad) Why don't the Stones play this next year??

This is certainly one of the best b-sides the stones created, if not greatest b-sides ever, by anyone.

Love this song.

Great track. I would put it up there with Through The Lonely Nights, I Am Waiting, She Smiled Sweetly, Travellin' Man and 2000 Man as some of my favorite non-warhorse tracks.

This needs a steady spot in the set list in 2012!

If only...Sadly sometimes we get what we ask for and they end up playing these, and then we are disappointed. I think of this as a very "Brian" track.

Funny how he's associated strongly with tracks he doesn't play on or doesn't contribute much to.

as a player I tend to think COTM is in open D. you can play that slack stringed (no capo) or up it to open E by capoing the second fret. that gives a less slack sound. preference, I guess. JJF was around the same time so it seems likely the record version was the same tuning. of course we all know it was changed (JJF) to open G, later on on live versions. and the intro on the record, which I happen to love, that goes B-E-A, was dropped for live versions. i play 'prodigal son' in open D too (capo second fret key E). and also 'you got the silver' (capo 3rd fret key F). but you can do it in open E tuning too (as opposed to D with capo on 2). again personal preference. i think COTM fell into this mold.

The guitars are tuned to open D with no capo involvement.

The wind blows rain into my face
The sun glows at the end of the highway
Child of the moon, rub your rainy eyes
Oh, child of the moon, give me a wide-awake, crescent-shaped smile

She shivers by the light she is hidden
She flickers like a lamp lady vision
Child of the moon, rub your rainy eyes
Child of the moon, give me a wide-awake, crescent-shaped smile

The first car on the foggy road riding
The last star for my lady is pining
Oh, child of the moon, bid the sun arise
Oh, child of the moon, give me a misty day, pearly gray
Silver, silky faced, wide-awake crescent-shaped smile

These lyrics certainly compare favorably to ANYTHING on ABB. Nice, creative imagery.

He's on saxophone (of all things).

About the shouted line at the beginning -- I listened to it over and over as a teenager trying to figure it out. I think it's definitely Mick. What I heard starts out with:

"Let us say goodbye so all the guys who don't know how..."

Everything after that is too hard to hear. But I might be tempted to try again.

Looks great to me. Only comment is the final closing riff. Keith starts much higher (12th fret?) and does a nice little chromatic finish.
