Think it's a very good song. Although, if they wanted to do a Reggie number I think they should have trusted themselves and finished the outtake "I Got A Letter". That one had some really good potential, nice groove.

Any real reggae musician who played that stiffly would have his bong confiscated for lack of use.

I think Eric Donaldson has won the song contest a couple of times since the seventies, making it a total of five

Edit: According to Wikipedia [en.wikipedia.org] the total is actually six

Ramshackle yet charming. Love it. They do a really good live version of it on that MSG show (27.6.75), which was one of only about 3 times it was played live, and which they took a chance on even though, as Jagger warns the crowd, they dont really know how to end it.

It'd be great to hear them unearth this one again - ideally with Mick and Keith sharing the mic on the choruses.

By doing so they could promote the Black And Blue Universal reissue...

i guess i'm in the minority again.....i like when they try "reggae".
i was unfamiliar with the original versions before I heard the Stones' take.
i like CHERRY OH BABY....but heck, i like their attempts at FUNK too.

hey helter...i think you meant TOO RUDE (not SO RUDE).

Love Donaldson's version.

Possibly my least favorite Stones song.

I guess it is fair to say that Send It To Me, Sweethearts Together, and You got to Walk and Don't Look Back are more favorable reggae efforts.

Still its hi-fi to the original.
You Dont Have To Mean It is imo the best reggae effort ever, esp. studio rendition.

Talkin' solo Careless Ethiopians Keith+Toots wipes the floor with anything,
Stones or otherwise.

Does anyone here remember the incredible controversythat this track caused back then? This and Zepp's D'yer Make'er seemed to bring out worryingly racist views from many rock fans at the time such aws 'why are the Stones and Zepp playing reggae?'
Glad to say that attitude was short lived. I always loved the song. Not as good as Eric Donaldson's original admittedly but it had had genuine warmth and humour and fitted so well between Hand Of Fate and Memory Motel.

That would be as odd as "rock fans" getting upset that the Stones and Led Zeppelin
were also playing American Blues.

Sweet Neo Con, this actually happened in the UK. Reggae was synonymous with skinheads back in the late 60s earely 70s which gave it a bad image and one that your average white, middle class rock fan found hard to accept.

The skinhead/reggae thing was a ludicrous association....skinheads were racists but loved West Indian music. I never understood that.

good thing they got over the bias against funk and disco, too... oh wait, that didn't happen.

Totally agree Baboon!!! Great post. Love You Don't Have to Mean and it really is the most authentic reggae...but I would add to that Crackin' Up from LYL. That is fantastic, with some stunning guitar runs.

To me this is the worst recording the Rolling Stones have ever made - okay one of the 5 worst along with Back to Zero, Winning Ugly, Sweet Neo Con and Feel On Baby

I really wanted to like this track, but the boys sound stiffer than a 2 by 4 here, and the track just goes nowhere for much too long. The damn thing doesn't create an atmosphere or mood, and there's no tension or resolution. A dud.

Here's some reggae that I personally recommend...

Just in case you've never heard Eric Donaldson's original

very cool to hear this.

i think it's fine that the stones released their version, it is good to see them mix it up, but it didn't electrify me.

the stones doing reggae sounds like a bunch of wanna-bes playing rastafarian. unlike the stones doing the blues, or r&B, which sounded revolutionary.

i'd be curious if anyone who was paying attention at the time has any insight as to whether the stones forays into reggae helped the music cross over?
