I'm having a hard time figuring out how it's "the usual 2-chord change in open G".
SMU has more than two chords but I think I get what you mean. What else is there? Dance Little Sister? That has a bridge. Can't think of anything else.

There are loads of songs in open G where Keith hits the fourth - Brown Sugar, Rip This Joint, Tumbling Dice, Happy, All Down The Line, Soul Survivor, If You Can't Rock Me, Luxury, Dance Little Sister, Lies, Before They Make Me Run - that's not a lot of songs compared to the amount of songs in standard tuning.
It's not "recycled", it's just what he does. "Recycled" would be the Chuck Berry lick in A LOT of songs, which, of all things, there's not much of.
