It was played in 1971.....we can be 90% sure....based on interviews and reports. Most probably dropped because of the 40-licks-fans who kept yelling for Satisfaction and Paint It Black

Because they rehearsed it and it sounded like crap.

...I really don't know that to be true, but it's the only logical explanation I can think of.

I know but i just meant that its hard to imagine taylor messing that song up, you would think at least that his part would have been brilliant as usual

but the thread does bring up a very good question: why didnt they play it regularly til Licks, being such a great song (my single favourite stonessong)?

Of course I don't know anything about the way they make choices for the setlist, but my
guess is it did not really fit in their idea of songs for the stage at the time. In the early
70s the Stones distinguished themselves from other popular bands from that era by not doing
overlong spun out guitar solos. Midnight Rambler was the epic song of the evening and most
other songs were kept under 5 minutes. That were the Stones at the time: short outbursts
of riffs and 16 bar solos at the max.

I remember reading this article about the Burbanks Rehearsals .The guy said the recording tapes he received were including a part of Can’t You Hear Me Knocking. He said also the existence of this tape was a proof that the Stones wanted to play this song on the 1972 US Tour.

I am a Frenchie ,as Mick affectionately called them in the Old Grey Whistle Test in 1977 .

Great song - yes, but the Stones generally aren't into endless guitar wankery, and back in a period when they were playing shows of 60-75 minutes that already had two very long pieces which were more popular (Midnight Rambler and YCAGWYW) maybe they felt that it would have taken up too much time.

That, plus the fact that it fell apart on the one or two occasions they did attempt it in 1971, so maybe they felt it wasnt worth the effort.

a phrase for the ages: "guitar wankery" -- gotta love it, gotta remember it, and gotta use it again!!!

The band that IS or WAS into heavy guitar wankery - the Grateful Bore. Actually not so, as it was appropriate in their case, and best listened to whilst stoned on Thai weed.

I don't think so, Scooter.

actually, I used to think that if ever there was one song that could replace Rambler as the show-stopper, the piece de resistance, that it would be Knockin.

@#$%& in this sense -- everything in the 'second half' of the song, the spacy, druggy MT solo part -- cut that out and it coulda been a warhorse. Not that it should be, but it does carry on a bit much.
