A couple of weeks ago I saw a band in Portland, Oregon called Pink Martini. I don't really know how to describe them. They are a 12-piece group with exceptional talent. The lead singer, China Forbes, is mesmerizing and she has an incredible vocal range.

Yeah they do & they come from Hungary, Lapland & Uganda/Gothenburg, respectively.
This is my best rock and roll year since 1983-84 or so.
Gettin' divorced was a success.

Well, he aint exactly a new artist but someone I met on our beloved site here that has really blown me away this last year is TOMMY WOMACK which in turn turned me on to his 80s band Government Cheese. This guy is a helluva talent and never ceases to amaze me with his versatility. Plus he's been a great friend to me. His "Tommy Womack Band" Washington,D.C. cd will rock yer socks off!!
Hope I didnt embarrass ya,Tommy.

Jackie Greene's 2008 album "Giving Up the Ghost" is quite good, but his previous one, "American Myth" is better to listen to as a whole. And I'm cheating here because I got the latter album when it came out. He's a great singer / songwriter playing in a folk rock vein.

Sunny Levine's "Love Rhino" album is quite good, too, if you like it eclectic that is. And I'm cheating again because I got the self-released version that came out a few years ago. His style as a musician / producer is rather diverse, using electronic techniques such as sampling and programming together with guitar, bass and drums, with some real exotic stringed instruments added.

Salme Dahlstrom might be my most recent discovery, as in found out about in 2008. Her album "The Acid Cowgirl Audio Trade" is a tour de force of a party in Big Beat music, but together with the rockabilly guitar licks she uses, the electronic music gets a rock edge. Plus, her songs are very catchy.

thanks for the recommendation on "american myth." being a nor-californian, been hearing about this greene kid for many years - but didn't get to experience him until a gig last year with phil - blew me away and i immediately went out and got "ghost" and have been loving it...a very rare talent - guitar chops, soulful singer, great songs - hmmm....and he even LOOKS like dylan circa '65

About time you gave that talented Greene boy a listen- and he is a home town boy for you!!! I have to travel to enjoy his concerts. And poor Adrian waits patiently for him to travel across the water!!winking smiley

Lots of new groups out there- some have already been mentioned-Fleet Foxes for one. Whether or not they have any longevity is yet to be determined. (My guess is they don't!) Have enjoyed:
Blitzen Trapper-"Furr"
Okkervil-"The Stand-Ins"
Vampire Weekend
Black Keys- "Attack and Release"
Felice Brothers
