RStone - to clarify

"I'm not saying they're bad--I'm just saying I don't "get" the huge appeal of certain artists-"

so for instance--i'm not crazy about U2--but i get why they're big--it's emotional, thoughtful, pretty catchy, smart--I just don't don't like it much--but I "get" why millions of others do

However, Dave Matthews--I have NO FREAKING CLUE why so many people go crazy for this mush--I don't "get" it

that better?

Yeah, I pretty much knew what you were getting at HB but I was thinking some were just listing artists they didn't like, that was why I highlighted Elvis as an example. Whether people actually like him or not most would agree he was a cultural icon and brought about a degree of change, same with The Beatles and Sex Pistols... and I'm 100% with you on Dave Matthews tho' he's no big fish over in the UK.

but Coldplay? I have no clue--totally escapes me

I was the one who mentioned Elvis. I know he is the single most important figure in the history of rock and roll. What I don't "get" is how he managed to be elevated to this lofty position by millions and millions of people who feel he deserves to be there. Personally, I don't care for him, and I don't "get" why so many people do.

Someone else I don't get would be Frank Sinatra.

1) Dave Mathews (What else can be said?)

2) Coldplay (why does every single song have to be super-duper emotional? Is that a rule?)

3) Belle and Sebastian (seems like forgotten Romper Room outtakes to me. Twee)

4) Bon Jovi (why were they the only hair metal / power ballad poser band to survive grunge?)

5) Madonna (a disco tart survives into late middle age? Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?)

Dylan- I loved much of his work through to blood on the tracks, but i really don't understand all the praise he gets from his last few. I just think its horrible sounding and I have to say the three times I have gone to see him have been three of the worst concerts I have ever seen (and not just me, i don't think I have heard more muttering about a show being shit from an audience ever).

He is rightly regarded as one of the most important writers in music history but I think the critics are ignoring their ears when heaping the praise on later day Dylan.

I see a whole lotta people speaking my language about Dave Matthews Band. Their name is a lie. They aren't a band. They're a bunch of soloists, all of them playing their instruments instead of the song. They wouldn't know taste if it drove up to them in a truck. Just my opinion.

I totally agree with ALL RAPPERS, especially Kayne West. Then I will have to add the following:
Ryan Adams, Rush, Justin Timberlake, Jack White, Yoko Ono, Coldplay, Grateful Dead, Black Eyed Peas, and L Skynnard.

3. CSN both as a group and individuals

I would also add Phil Spector - mad maybe, but not a genius. Very limited CV when you compare his work to other producers, George Martin, to name but one.
