Les Curieuses Chroniques de la Villa Nellcote
by Geir Hørnes

Review by Bjornulf Vik, IORR Editor
Published Nov 3, 2025 - Updated Nov 4, 2025

Left: First 2021 edition in English - Right: Extended 2025 edition in French

On the first page of the French edition it says "edition augmentée", which means "expanded edition" according to Google Translate, or "extended edition" in my understanding. Anyway, the new 2025 edition of the Villa Nellcote edition is just out, it is, as the author is saying, "the story goes on".

Since the first edition of "The Curious Chronicles of Villa Nellcote" was released in 2021, the authour Geir Hørnes said there were to tasks going more or less at the same time:

  1. The French spoken fans said Villa Nellcote is French, so the story should be told in a French language book
  2. There was more to tell, new pictures, new insight, more to the story to be told

The first edition of the book was a numbered series of 1,000 copies. A second print run of the book was then done, now also almost sold out. While the editor Geir Hørnes worked on from 2021 to 2025 with more sources, more pictures, more details, and even reworked original material, the idea of doing the book in French settled, so here it is : A new extended edition of "The Curious Chronicles of Villa Nellcote", extended and reworked, with 60 more pages.

The book is heavy, weight 1.7 kg (3.7 pound). The shipping is solid, protected so that this masterpiece of a book is arriving without and bumps or damages to corners. It is even wrapped in with silk paper, with a sticker in the pink color of the French edition book, with the book title printed on it. As a collector, I keep everything, even this beautiful silk paper and sticker. After carefully opening the wrapping, paper, the heavy art book is in my hands. I have had it for some weeks now, turning the pages, comparing the contents to the English edition, looking for the new bits of information, and it is impressing, nothing short.

Like the first edition in 2021, the quality of the book, paper, printing, layout, balance of pictures, art and writing, is excellent. This is certainly not a cheap pocket book. When reading it, I have been afraid of spilling coffee, water or food into this beautiful book. I want to preserve it in mint condition, and the layout and quality is asking for care when reading it.

There is something magic about the Villa Nellcote story. The home of Keith Richards in tax exile in France, the location with an important role in the creation of The Rolling Stones double album "Exile On Main St.". The "Villa Nellcote" book is telling this story, through people, photographers, eye witnesses, pictures of the people, the guitars, musicians, the rooms, tape box picture from the Stones Archive, like the author Geir Hørnes states: "The story goes on".

All the French Rolling Stones fans, as well as all those who are interested in the history of the building, the owners, the music recorded there by The Rolling Stones, who were there at the time, fans and researchers do look for any bit of information on the way. I have to admit I have been playing "Exile On Main St." while reading the book. It is adding to the feeling of the time travel back to the days of the creation of "Exile".

Thanks to the author Geir Hørnes for his continous work on this project, and sure the French spoken Rolling Stones fans will be happy about this new book, as well as those who are interested in the new bits in the story!

Some details from the facts sheet by the author:

Les Curieuses Chroniques de la Villa Nellcote

An updated and expanded French edition of the 2021 book — now with 60 extra pages, fresh interviews, and even more Riviera mischief. Several of you lovely people here on IORR contributed ideas, insights, or support. I hope I’ve done you justice — merci!

The new French edition is more than a straight translation:
It includes new interviews with Nellcote guests like Marshall Chess and Gretchen Parsons-Carpenter.
You’ll meet the mysterious woman who found the residences for the band in 1971 and sealed the deals.
A former local Cowboy speaks for the first time — 18 at the time, later convicted in the 1973 drug case.
And for you courtroom nerds (you know who you are), I tracked down the family of Judge Lasfargue, the man who signed the [mandat d’amener against Keith.
You´ll also find out, once and for all, whether there are any original Nellcote tapes left in the Rolling Stones Archive!
The final chapter takes us through the clean-up after the Stones, from the Black and Blue years through to [Bridges to Babylon so to speak, tracing two colorful decades as Nellcote swaps rock 'n' roll for Italian glamour and Monegasque royalty.

Curious? You´ve come to the right place.

As per usual, you can purchase the signed and numbered edition from
