QuoteIrix QuoteStonedRambler Yeah but those special formats do not really play a role in the general public. Vinyl is a special format and doesn't really play a role in the general public? It does play some role of course (especially in sales since it is counted 1000x streams) but still the brickwalled Stereo mix is the one the vast majority of people will listen to.

QuoteIrix QuoteDoxa complaining - rightly IMO - about the brickwall is as useless It isn't. Listen to 'Hackney Diamonds' on CD, Digital or HiRes. Then listen again from Vinyl or Dolby Atmos. The latter are far better, sound-wise. Yeah but those special formats do not really play a role in the general public. I bet Mick didn't even listen to those. The format that 90%

QuoteIrix Peter Gabriel's new i/o album has just a dynamic range of DR5-9. It was mastered by Matt Colton - he also did the loud DR5-7 mastering for 'Hackney Diamonds' (CD, Digital & HiRes). But 'Hackney Diamonds' mixing/mastering for Dolby Atmos was done by Giles Martin. Yeah but it also doesn't really sound like a modern album from 2023. Could have as wel

QuoteIrix QuoteStonedRambler It's 2024 and music does get compressed and brickwalled nowadays. No, that's not generally true. For instance, Giles Martin or Steven Wilson do not brickwalled masterings. True, but they (Giles Martin etc.) do not aim for a contemporary sound. Mick Jagger's wish for Hackney Diamonds was that it sounds like an album made in 2023. Therefore Serba

QuoteGasLightStreet QuoteIrix Quotebakersfield That's interesting. Already posted here a while ago - - Hackney Diamonds comparison: good sounding Vinyl & Dolby Atmos vs. brickwalled CD & HiRes. The Rolling Stones should be EMBARRASSED by this. And in regard to their entire 1971-1997 (back) catalog thanks to StePHen Marcussen. Bob Ludwig RULES. It's 2024 and music d

With the "mini-tours" in recent years stage design always was a compromise between being economy and design. I can imagine if the HD tour is a bit bigger then we also might get a more special stage than on the Sixty tour.

Quotebakersfield Aren't single 'releases' just ploys to get radio stations playing the songs and thus keep the album afloat? I can't see any point in a physical single release without bonus tracks. These days that's how it is, yes.

If it's mixed by Sam Wheat my enthusiasm for this release instantly is a lot lower... The audio for the BBC broadcast was mixe by Sam Wheat Ah, that's unfortunate. Thanks ironbelly for the blind test! They're always the best. No. 1 I found a bit boring, unexcited and "flat" sounding. No. 2 has a great edge and energy, the guitars cut through very well. It's quite a loud master, however it doesn't sound too squashed or brickwalled too my ears. No. 3 is a bit sharp sounding in the trebles for me. No. 4 sounds relatively n

Quotededospegajosos wow, so the Virgin Exile and the Universal Exile sound that different? I never notice this, I will check it out again soon. I mean It should be dramatically different I think the difference is dramatic. Just listen to the drum fill on Loving Cup when Charlie kicks in. On the Virgin it's sounding super punchy while on the Universal the balls are cut off.

As a recovering audiophile and hunter for the best mastering of every album I think I can give you me two cents on that topic. The virgin masters by Bob Ludwig sound absolutely impressive. They have a three-dimensionality and a depth that is unmatched. He really tried to let the albums sounds as good as somehow possible. However - if you are used to the original vinyls they can sound a bit

QuoteSpud QuoteNellcote1971 Yes a lot of people rave about the flat transfer (haven't heard it YET). What I don't get... I've read numerous posts (here and at the Hoffman forum) that indicate that the original master was lost and that famously Bob Ludwig had to purchase a mint Monarch copy for his 1994 mastering (source: Don Was) but I've found nothing about the resurfacing

QuoteSpud Fingers crossed that whoever engineers the release remembers that this is a guitar band. You'd be forgiven for thinking that some of the "modern era" vaults releases were "The Chuck Leavell & Daryll Jones Band" This concert (not the whole show though) was already streamed by the BBC. Yes, the mix is guitar heavy, a bit high on Ronnie's side though

Now consider Mick's genetics and add his workout routine and his diet. I'd not be suprised if the guy is still wiggling his arse in his 90s.

At the beginning of the Sixty tour they used some kind of fuzz pedal for the intro of Satisfaction but they dropped it after a few shows Personally I don't need it. Live is live and studio is studio. Neither do I need a choir on YCAGWYW. But that's just me

QuoteBig Al Whilst it’s certainly true that we’ve all been collectively thrilled with unwavering longevity, they will not be performing at 90. Yes, a decade ago we may have been dismissive at the notion of Mick strutting his stuff aged 80, but in another ten years, he’ll be a decade away from getting his birthday card from King Charles. Who knows... Ten years ago nobody thought they would be do

All this complaints that you can't buy the live version separately. Well, that's exactly the point. Keeping the streams and sales of the album up. If it wasn't for that they might not even have released the concert.
