The "Great Line" post mentioned the line about Charlie in John Hiatt's song "Slow Turning." I was thinking about other songs that referenced the Stones: "Behind the Wall of Sleep" by The Smithereens talks about a girl in a band who stands "just like Bill Wyman." David Bowie's "Drive in Saturday": "..when people stared in J

I don't know if most people are in tune to "the Stones have left the building" mentality, or if they are just sheep (and want to go home), but I thought that the Stones performance that night deserved a longer and louder ovation than they got. A friend of mine saw them in Long Beach in '72 and swears that the ovation lasted 20 minutes after the show ended. There was no enc

I agree that parts of Four Flicks are so frantic that they become unwatchable. But as far as "relaxed" direction....to me it just seems to go slack. It doesn't reflect the tension in the music. Some of the framing of the shots in the stadium parts have so much empty space as well...it's too loose. I

Look for a copy of "Message To Love", the documentary of the entire 1970 Isle of Wight Festival that finally came out in 1995. It's an alternate-universe version of the Woodstock movie. (There's also a video of The Who's complete performance there) Like "Rock n Roll Circus", "Festival Express" and "When We Were Kings" it's grea

Saw this film twice in a theatre when if first opened, and I remember being disappointed by it. The scene where Keith swings his guitar at the fan happened on that tour, but it was during the pay-per-view show on Keith's birthday, not in the film Let's Spend the Night Together (it was shown in Video Rewind as well) Hal Ashby was a great director (go to imdb.com for the credits) an

To me the most amazing thing about the "New Cars" is that TODD RUNDGREN is fronting it. That's like Dylan joining a Byrds reunion! As for the ex-Creedence guys, hey they gotta make a living...I remember an article where one of the members of Crazy Horse said he had to work for his uncle's auto parts shop while waiting for Neil to call... At least Clifford & Cook p

My fave Frank LP is "In The Wee Small Hours." I bought it in '78 because I just loved the cover! It changed my life. Comparing Frank and the Stones is pointless. They exist in two different dimensions.

In less than one year I saw Preston at the Forum five times--two shows with George Harrison on his infamous Dark Horse tour in late '74, and then three nights with the Stones in July 75. His solo set during the Harrison tour was sweet relief--George was drowning during that tour: his voice was shot (they called it the "Dark Hoarse" tour), he played a lot of songs from his new (

I'll say it again: almost every song on GHS is about a minute too long. It may be someone's "favorite" but in no way does it come close to being the Stones best. Some of the best stuff during those sessions (Criss Cross, Tops, Waiting on a Friend) didn't even make it on the album. What were they thinking?? best tracks: 100 Years Ago Angie (even though i

Mac is The Man. His solo work is great. His 1980 album, Bump In The Night, is incredible. If you love the Stones, you will love that record. I myself thought it was much, much better than Emotional Rescue (also 1980). Years ago I told him, "You kicked the Stones' ass that year!" He couldn't believe it, but it was true. Regarding the book: it's been a few

The other night at the Forum, did anyone else think they were open to doing another encore after Satisfaction? There seemed to be quite a long pause before the lights came up. It crossed my mind that maybe, since they seemed to be having such a good time, that it might happen. The applause was sustained, but was tapering off. Lots of people were heading for the exits. So without a thunde

It Won't Take Long is fantastic. There is a sense of understated menace in the music that has been missing since...what, maybe Let It Bleed?? (Unlike cartoonish attempts like Mr. D, Undercover, Fight, etc.) The lyrics are cynical enough to have met Andrew's approval, yet in no way seem forced or phoney. The words are wary, but the performance just kicks. They aren't preten

A memorable description of Sticky Fingers said that on that album the Stones "rattled their drugs like maraccas." I think there's a drug reference in about 3/4 of the songs on that one. Another quote from the time said, "It reads like a Crumb comic...but burns like an addict's cooker!"

Give them credit for NOT doing Rain Fell Down, since it was raining outside. Way too obvious. Worried About You was EXCELLENT. Unlike the loose/tentative version on Four Flicks, this one was was transcendent...they were in total control and delivered the goods. I would have liked a few more/new ABB tracks...but hey, you get what you need! It was a great crowd, too.

"Ain't it good to be alive?" Yes. Right now, it certainly is. Listening to "It Won't Take Long." Going to see the Stones tomorrow night, finally at the Forum again, where I saw them for the first time in '75. Back then their longevity would have been unimaginable. Look how many bands they've outlasted...of course, there's the Beatles...
