according to today's Daily Telegraph, McCartney will open the Olympics in London in 2012. No Ringo (on tour in USA), no Zeppelin (Plant not interested)... and no Stones (no reason). not playing next year, or also on tour?

The '73 tour live recordings (like Brussels) always get mentioned as Mick Taylor's best live material, but I might just vote for the Bob Dylan 1984 Tour of Europe. Listen to the bootlegs of the Barcelona or Wembley gigs - some really great guitar work much in the style of Mick's work on Infidels. Real Live has just a small sample.

You can add Rampton in the UK list - town in the East Midlands (memo from turner) I suppose "Stone" in England is a bit of a stretch (Heart of Stone....), and also "Sway" - a village in the New Forest...

Seeing Bill Wyman last week at the Ambassadors, and someone speculating on the Boogie for Stu Southampton gig on another thread, reminded me of this Bill Wyman solo gig I saw in early 1989. It was for a Kampuchea appeal (I think the BBC kids programme Blue Peter), and in Ringwood (south of England near Sotuhampton) because Bill had a friend there from the early 60s who asked him to do it. well I'm going tonight to enjoy a tribute evening for Ian Stewart; raise some money for a heart charity; see some great musicians. Looks like we'll get 3 Stones playing: upside is we might get 1, 2 or 3 more. (don't forget MT) I think it would be a bit sad only going in case Mick or Keith do one or two numbers - and rather insulting to the rest of the musicians.

the printed set lists are a great check on who is playing what and when - maybe because they are used by the sound guys to ensure everyone is in the mix! They even state if people are "off-stage". eg at San Sebastian, Start Me Up had BV (backing vocals) and BC GTR (Blondie) off stage. It also noted Blondie playing on It's All Over Now and Satisfaction. It also showed when Tim R

This was a great gig, apart from the heavy rain earlier in the day. I made the best "warm-up" band - Wilco Johnson, who played a fair number of Feelgood songs to get me in the rocking 70s mood. What can you say about the Faces and especially Ronnie last night - Fantastic!! As the guys say in the earlier post - you must see this band live. On many songs he was playing almost note p

According to Ian Mclagan's book, Stu used to let the Faces use the Stones rehearsal studio in Bermondsey (SE London), so he clearly had a relationship with Ronnie Lane going back some time. Of corse they both built mobile recording studios so maybe more of a personal link there.

It could just be that the best thing for Ronnie to get back on track would be work - ie on Tour. He will have the pressure of colleagues to stay on the straight and narrow (ish) and be kept fairly busy. OK so who looks after him with no Jo... but at least Mick can bollock him directly instead of using Jo as a surrogate. And he'll have to pass the insurance test: he's done it before

In the UK this basically means he won't go to court, but has been warned by the police and this could be used as evidence of previous behaviour if it happens again... No court = no conviction = free to tour.

With all the noise surrounding Ronnie's private life, I had missed the "News" item from BV about tour rumours and Europe being the first continent this time - the first time since Stones global tours kicked-off in the early 70s. Why do we now see "news" about long circulating rumours (which BV will usually discount as rumours)? I can think of two possible reasons - peo

I think it is because it is the thickest, non-wound, string. So temperature changes and bending combine with the tension to make it drift off-tune more easily.

L'Olympia - what an evening! Parisien atmosphere on the floor of the theatre. Great set list; the occasional bit of "off" guitar playing. The band was really rocking. I can even see myself on the 40 Licks DVD!

The legal capacity is normally 300, but that gives a good amount of space: there are some tables/chairs and plenty of standing/dancing space. The dressing room is about 1 metre by 3 metres! bench down one side. Tiny. Great PA (and sound man) and good sound despite the shape of the room.

for years previous tours have started in the summer - allows them to do outdoor gigs. but if the new format is only arenas (much easier on the bodies of performers and audience) then a winter start would be possible... start saving yer money!
