What you see on this illustrated cover placed in magazines was exactly what CBS used on its reissues of Some Girls on LP, cassette and CD. My question remains: did any of the Atlantic pressings of the LP use this all-illustrated no-cutout version that the 8-track and cassette tape versions used? The album art itself was based upon a Valmor Hair Products ad from the 1920s. Not long after th

video: The title of this 1965 hit by Robert Parker has me asking this question: would you imagine Jonny Lang and The Rolling Stones duetting together to this song? The reason I bring up Jonny Lang (he was the opening act for the Stones' two Portland, OR dates at the Rose Garden Arena in January 1998) is because early in his career, he played his concert dates barefoot (he ceased doing so

I wonder if "Midnight Rambler" being overdubbed onto between the 50/55-second mark of "You Can't Always Get What You Want" was the result of the master tape being put on a recorder rather than a playback-only mastering deck, a la Stan Ricker's treatment of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon for Mobile Fidelity which had some Supertramp song overdubbed onto the e

October 10-November 29 and December 6-15, 1977, EMI Studios, Boulogne Billancourt, Paris, France (Some Girls sessions): Take 1: reggae-ish version, under title "Never Stop" Take 2: very early, less lyrics, no backing vocals Take 3: early, with backing vocals but still no lead guitar April-May 1981, EMI Stud

QuoteGasLightStreet And this whole time I've been wondering what if Mick Jagger joined Deep Purple, instead. The whole story goes back to Deep Purple's Behind the Music special. When Ian Gillan left in 1973, one possible choice as his replacement was Jagger. ~Ben

How would Deep Purple albums such as Burn and Stormbringer have sounded if the group actually got Mick Jagger to replace Ian Gillan, instead of future Whitesnake lead singer David Coverdale? The same can be said for live renditions of Gillan-era classics like "Child in Time," "Highway Star" and "Smoke on the Water." ~Ben

Here's a listing of certain quotes by the Stones from Massimo Bonanno's autobiography, The Rolling Stones Chronicle: Charlie Watts, June 1968: "You can't bring back an era that is dead. If the Beatles went back to Liverpool now there would be no need to cordon off blocks to prevent the thousands of fans getting at them. The times have changed and it's going to be a lon

Would any of you here happen to remember a Volvo ad from 1986 that had "You Can't Always Get What You Want" as its background music? The September before, the Swedish car maker's ad agency wanted to use the portions of the song with the London Bach Choir doing their thing, such as the opening and toward the end. This version of the TV spot in question didn't last very

Has anyone tried to duplicate the so-called "Jumpin' Jack Flash/Street Fighting Man sound" on a Norelco Carry-Corder 150? This is more or less the U.S.-market equivalent of the Philips EL3302 tape recorder Keith Richards used to record the basic tracks of those two 1968 Stones hits. ~Ben

I can only guess but I think Mick's monotone harmonica solo (two notes as he told to Melissa Block on All Things Considered) was performed on the spot when the tape was running, as he did not improve on it for some reason before the song was released in its finished form... much like the iconic Moog synth solo at the end of Emerson, Lake & Palmer's "Lucky Man" which accord

Of course, if the time comes for the Stones to re-record "Jumpin' Jack Flash" and "Street Fighting Man" the overdriven acoustic guitar part is most difficult since no audiocassette player can duplicate the trickery of the old Philips EL2203 unit. ~Ben

Was there any reason that the Stones didn't perform "You Can't Always Get What You Want" with a choir live in concert, in the early years (1969-74)? Did they ever play a master tape of the first 50 seconds (with the London Bach Choir singing) of the song live in concert once? ~Ben

In the case of "As Tears Go By," its appearance on the 2/13/1966 broadcast of The Ed Sullivan Show was the only live performance of the song in the group's early days (especially with Brian Jones); it is true the Stones never played this song on tour until the one for A Bigger Bang. ~Ben

It should be known Goodbye Yellow Brick Road was also the album that Elton had intended to record in Jamaica because, as he put it, The Rolling Stones recorded their Goat's Head Soup album there. But the original vision wasn't realized partly because of the studio's technical problems, and some people were striking and picketing it (the studio was also a record plant). The Jamai

If the Rolling Stones were ever to perform "You Can't Always Get What You Want" with choir accompaniment on one of their future NJ dates, I'm wondering if they would hire the New Jersey Mass Choir, who was hired to perform backing vocals on Foreigner's 1985 number 1 hit "I Want to Know What Love Is"? ~Ben

Another question: how old were the youngest members in the Bach Choir at the time this song was being cut (think back to 1968-69), and how old were the oldest? Again, it is certain the oldest members might all be dead now, while the youngest members, my guess, are probably seniors already. I also want to know if anyone has any old footage of the Bach Choir rehearsing their parts of YCAGWYW

Do you ever think the members of the Bach Choir (or their families, considering some of the oldest members who were in that ensemble back in 1969 might be dead now) would have sued the Rolling Stones, Jody Klein and his late father's (he died in 2009) record label ABKCO, demanding royalties from each of the three parties for their part in "You Can't Always Get What You Want"?

QuoteSipuncula By "mixes", is it the same exact backing track with different instrumentation/overdubs, or is it related songs like Honky Tonk Women/Country Honk? If the former, that seems like it would be really hard to pull off. I would like the HTW/CH thing, although it's probably a stretch considering their studio work ethic these days. At this point I would be grateful for even

Being inspired by Shania Twain's Up! album, has anyone ever thought of the Rolling Stones recording one album in different versions? That album I refer to has been released in red (pop/rock), green (country) and blue (international) versions, with the blue mixes obviously being most exotic. That is, the first disc would contain pop/rock mixes (typical), another disc would contain the same

When listening to the song "Out of Control" (studio version, track 7 on Bridges to Babylon), during the break and at the fade-out, does it sound like Mick Jagger is playing a chromatic harmonica? This harmonica is said to be more difficult to play compared to the diatonic harmonica Mick J. usually favors. It also has a wider range of notes and is often used in classical settings with
