QuoteErik_Snow Seeing Ron Wood trying to copy Taylor on CYHMK makes me blush I love his solo on this track. It's irrational but I can't help it. That being said, Ronnie's take on it 10 years ago does more for me that the Staples footage of Mick T. doing it the other night. Ron's worse technically but to me, at least, his playing just has a lot more personality. I know, I

The Stones, Beatles, and Dylan have much better overall '60s catalogs, but for the best single album, I've gotta go with Love - Forever Changes or either one of the first two Doors albums.

Aw, man - this really, really, really sucks. I loved Ray. A world-class musician, an innovator, and a total raconteur. I got really into the Doors over the last few years and grew to love Ray's completely over the top trumpeting of the Morrison/Doors legend. He was so gleefully, shamelessly blatant about it yet he always came off as warm and engaging. He was very rightfully proud of

Met Keith after soundcheck at the Orpheum in Boston in '93. He was really cool as he signed an autograph and cracked an unintelligible joke and laughed at it. Met Ronnie at his NYC booksigning in '07. He just said hi and signed until I told him how much I loved the "Miss Judy's Farm" riff, when he jumped up, started shaking my hand with both of his, and shouting &quo

You'll never find that combination of looks, voice, style, talent, charisma, humility, and humor at the forefront of a new style of music ever again. He was the perfect guy in the perfect place at the perfect time. Musically, Chuck, Jerry Lee, Buddy, Little Richard, etc. were probably better... but Elvis was the only one who had it all. He's absolutely mythical.

There have been times (outside MSG, mainly) where I either couldn't score a ticket outside the venue or, in one case, bought a fake one and got denied by the ticket takers - and just wound up going home. Oh, and in December when I had the flu and blew off going down to Barclays, even though it was only a few subway stops away from me. Of course, I didn't have a ticket, so the decisi

Quotestonehearted Didn't Marianne say in her autobiography about Spanish Tony that he might have been a good human being "had he lived"? I think she said that about the French count who supplied Pam Courson with the smack that may or may not have killed Jim Morrison. They were seeing each other and took off for Morocco after Jim croaked. The count himself OD'd soon thereaf

QuoteDuane in Houston Since we have a Doors thread going I thought I'd ask a few Doors questions for any Doors "experts" out there : Did The Doors ever use a live bass player in concert? (I'm thinking they used a studio musician to play bass on some of the recordings. Correct me if I'm wrong on that. But I don't think they ever used a bass player live.) I think

Wow - for being fans of one of the first lead singers to bend traditional color and gender lines, a lot of you guys are being pretty damn close-minded. I like JT and I like Bruno Mars. They're talented guys putting out catchy music and making good show in the process. It may not be rock but who the @#$%& cares? Middle-aged Stones fans aren't his target market, anyway.

QuoteDandelionPowderman No, but I learned how to read music when I played the piano earlier. I learned how to play guitar a different way, though, by listening to records and by discovering licks when trying out different things... You & me both! I quit piano when I brought a Hot Rocks songbook in to my teacher and told her I wanted to learn "Sympathy". She said no. I kept tak

Nope - just by playing along to records/watching concert vids. Videos are especially helpful in learning where to capo (in both tunings but primarily 5-string open G). As for fretting/learning the riffs, that's just trial and error.

It's not what it used to be. There's a John Varvatos/Morrison Hotel gallery at the old CBGB's space. That's worth a look. The Bowery Electric is a fairly decent bar/rock club - that's a few doors away. I think there's a Whole Foods down there now, too. Like I said... it's not what it used to be. The Bowery Ballroom on Delancey, however, is a great

I am curious to see if anyone can post the two different mixes of the performances of "JJF" and "You Can't Always Get What You Want" from "The Rock and Roll Circus" as depicted in the "25X5" documentary and the DVD of "Rock and Roll Circus." His backing band from the mid-'90s up through earlier this year - The Figgs, from Albany, NY - are also well worth checking out. Very influenced by Graham and the Kinks but with a harder edge that suggests both the Stones and the Clash. Great lyrics and ridiculously catchy hooks wrapped up in one ass-kicking package. The Figgs' Website

We Love You, All Sold Out, 2000 Light Years... I just realized that Charlie started sounding like "Charlie" right around the time Keith developed into "Keith". History says it's JJF/Beggars but the seeds were sewn in Button and accelerated through '67. Oh, and he swings like a mofo on Down The Road Apiece and Neighbors.
