I saw 'em in Knoxville in '72 and in Memphis in '75 and, in my opinion, '72 was better because... it just was. Knoxville '65 was the most fun. Forum: Tell Me
"My Girl" is not their best moment. Mick's vocal sounds thin and tentative. But- I think if they had tackled it later in their career, he could've pulled it off, as I think we all agree that Mick's voice has gotten better over time. A more guitar-oriented arrangement done ala "Imagination" could be a keeper. Forum: Tell Me
I remember seeing Hunter playing live backing The Chambers Bros. in '72. The Detroit album w/ Mitch Ryder is definitely worth hearing. I've also heard that it's Hunter/Wagner supplying the firepower on Aerosmith's "Train Kept A Rollin'". Forum: Tell Me
I have a Sony DVP-NS90V, which is a single disc player. The quality on SACDs is excellent as is the DVD audio and video quality when I watch movies. I don't remember what I paid, but it was relatively cheap, around $300 USD. Forum: Tell Me
The 1964 and 1965 NME Poll Winner Shows, although the sets were short, along with the TAMI show performance are probably the best quality truly live recordings available from the band w/ Brian. Forum: Tell Me
The Beatles started as an r'n'b combo with a strong rockabilly element. The Stones began as a blues band. The Beatles morphed into a pop/rock band as the Stones evolved into an r'n'b/rock band. From late '65 on they both had totally absorbed all influences and had their own unique, individual sound and style. Forum: Tell Me
A Gallon Of Gas off of Low Budget is one of my favorite Kink songs with lyrics as relevant today as they were in 1980; not to mention that Dave absolutely tears it up on the blues guitar. Forum: Tell Me

I have a '60 Les Paul Jr. and, in this case, one pickup is all you need. It has a great resonate clean sound and absolutely screams when you crank it. I have a Tokai Tele, and if I didn't have the neck pickup, it would be limiting. Forum: Tell Me
If the Stones honored James Brown with a tribute on their shows this summer, as they did with Ray Charles last year, what JB tune would you most like to hear them cover? How about "Cold Sweat"? Forum: Tell Me
I saw Badfinger in Mar. '71 in Knoxville on a double bill w/ The Grass Roots. They were a tight rockin' little band at that point and put on a really good show. I remember being impressed by their vocals. This was right after "No Dice" so they played most of that and closed with a killer rock 'n' roll medley that was straight out of Hamburg. Pete Ham played the red G Forum: Tell Me
I was at the Memphis '75 show and they didn't use the Lotus stage. It was in a football stadium and they had erected scaffolding towers for the PA, which people climbed on. This is what Mick is referring to. They started very late. Supposedly, someone threw some type of firework (it was July 4th) and damaged some vital piece of equipment which needed to be repaired or replaced. Forum: Tell Me
Any chance of you guys scanning and posting some of the better/rarer photos here for the rest of us? I'd particularly like to see some guitar shots. Thanks! Forum: Tell Me
I saw Big Star live one chilly night in '71 atop a parking garage at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. It was a free show and only about 100 people showed up. They were very good. In addition to their own stuff, they did a Ventures medley and a kick-ass cover of Dizzy Miss Lizzie. Forum: Tell Me

Any of the old blues stuff like Mick cut with The Red Devils. Mick and Keith's covers of One Way Out and Don't Start Me To Talkin' on Jimmy Roger's "Blues Blues Blues" album were outstanding.
I really wish they'd take "Mercy Mercy" down off the shelf and give it a thrash. Forum: Tell Me
I can't believe no one has mentioned the Pretty Things in this thread. They were every bit as raw as the early Stones and are still out there doing it today. Their latest album "Rage Before Beauty" came out in '99 and is pretty damn good. They have a new live DVD out now. Also McCartney's "Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying" is a Ray Charles cover, not the Forum: Tell Me
I do entertainment production work and have done some lighting work for Dolly. I remember the first time I met her, a voice in my head was going "Lookinhereyes!Don'tlookatherchest!Lookatherface!Don'tlookdown!" It was a moment. But, she is just a nice as she can be and the down-home persona she projects is not fake. Her current band is great and she ALWAYS puts on a good show. Forum: Tell Me
