And watch out for the "headshops". That can be a very ugly experience. Just go in and ask for something mellow. Not too strong. In a good coffeeshop, like the Dampkring, they will tell you what is good for starters. Expensive usually means strong, so just be a cheap bastard.

Well, I would recommend the on-sen ( outside hot bath ) experience. And that's excellent here on Hokkaido. Personally I am not a big fan of Tokyo. Things are really expensive there and there's too many people. Try the north. It's cool. Actually it's freezing.
