The Beatles could certainly play live. Listen to the boots: tight and driving band, strong vocals, and no supporting musicians. Not to mention they couldn't hear themselves more than half the time and concert sound system technology was all but nonexistent. Springsteen was annointed by US media conglomerates (who had financial interests in his record company, of course) as the new Dyl

I can't complain about the song and video, but as a person who cherishes freedom of critical expression I must complain about being told, in effect, that I shouldn't complain. (... I do love the post, BTW!)

Correct, Beelyboy, RFK is different from FedEx field. FedEx field is the new home of the NFL team and holds 90K for games (but much, much less for concerts). Stones opened their '94 world tour with 2 shows at RFK in August, amid brutal heat and humidity. The first night was a 'stone cold' sellout. The second night it was packed, but the farthest upper deck from front and cent

About 33% of the stadium (likely a little more) is unavailable for rock concerts. I'm a Stones fan through and through. I was at their 2002 Licks show (4 October 02) the crowd was late arriving, it wasn't a sellout, but the audience was big and vocal. Saturday night for Paul the crowd was late arriving, it wasn't a sellout, and they were big and vocal ... and probably larger

I was there. It was over 90% sold out. By the time Paul took the stage you had to look to find empty seats. There were a few in most upper sections but they appeared isolated. Definitely not entire unsold rows, etc. The field appeared very full.

Where were you seated, jaggerman? I was there and, from where I was watching and listening, it was incredible.

I was front and center, small stage at Atlantic City in 2006; 3 meters away and directly under Mick as he performed. Extremely unlikely he wears a wig. Hair color? Of course. Wig? Not likely. Also, BTW, if you're some distance from Mick on the floor, it occasionally appears as if his arms are flabby, but that's just shadows from the spotlight. When I was 10 feet away it was cle

A Stones cover of 'Tracks of My Tears?' I bet we'd all be tearful after hearing that track! But yeah, that should definitely be a new holy grail for the collectors. C'mon folks, get out there and find it!

Great posts by Whiskey and SwayStones. FYI Sway, I had the exact same experience as you: I listened to that record pretty much every day for months and months after it came out. Today, in all honesty, I actually like the '69 boots more because, believe it or not, the Stones shows were actually MORE exciting live than Ya Ya's is with the dubs and partially rearranged song orders.

ChrisM: Absolutely agree with you on the Under My Thumb/I'm Free medley from MSG. The tempo (more upbeat than the West Coast version of I'm Free, which also isn't bad) plus the great audience reception, PLUS MT's tremendous solo (great use of feedback!) were really special. If only more people could hear that tremendous performance.

War horse = A Rolling Stones song that most on IORR agree should be played every show, and more than once per show, if at all possible. Setlist = 1. Any complaint about the Rolling Stones. 2. An invitation to engage in personally abusive argument. 3. Highly relevant comparisons between the Rolling Stones and Eastern European polka bands. 4. Any combination of the above.

Charlie's high-hat sounds really bright - maybe too much so for an audience recording. Mick J.'s vocals are super clear and crisp. They definitely seem soundboardish. If this is an audience tape, the taper was good buddies with the Hells' Angels. ... Or else he/she wasn't, in which case we have our explanation as to why this recording ends before the second verse!

Thanks Eleanor Rigby. We should recognize that the bass and drums don't have the closeness one would associate with a typical soundboard mix. ... But then, Altamont was hardly a typical concert. For example, there was no 'backstage' at all, and front stage was complete chaos. Any soundboard recording would have been a kluge, no matter who was managing it. Checking out

JR may be right (he usually is); however, please keep in mind: I and others were there at Altamont - Keith was unbelievably loud in the beginning. So much so that he almost completely drowned out everyone except Mick J. I say this despite having been on the Mick T. side of the stage! Also, the fact that one can clearly hear Mick J. and, probably, Keith talking just before JJF cranks up su

Great, hilarious post by magenta. Great, hilarious inputs, especially from Elmo Lewis. MUST hear Mick singing '... But the kid is not my son.' You know, as an advance disclaimer for all the paternity issues he'll surely find himself in during the upcoming tour.

Awesome!!! Finally, the full intro to JJF from Altamont! It's definitely the real one - slowest '69 version of JJF by far and Keith is drowning everyone else out, just like we who attended remember!

Anyone familiar with the London Roundhouse live version ('70 I think)? Mick Taylor absolutely soared on it. Mick Jagger ended the song with a huge sweeping 'Ahhh thank 'ya!' Excellent, all out performance.

I was at Cow Palace in SF for both '75 shows, and it was a fascinating spectacle when they did the Billy Preston numbers. Consider: 1. Bill Wyman played keyboards. 2. While Preston sang, Mick swung FAR out across the audience on a long rope hanging from the ceiling. Many, many people in the crowd were reaching for and almost grabbing him. 3. Keef was invisible the whole time. I

Agree with stone-relics and CousinC: the passages referenced are anarchic, agressive, and most deliberately chaotic. The keyword in timbernardis's post may be 'near' discordant. They're definitely not out of key and were clearly placed on purpose. Also, are we sure these are actually piano notes? They remind me of whatever instrument was used on 'Backstreet Girl&#

At Arrowhead Stadium in KC, the audience response was polite. It didn't appear a lot of people knew the song. The musical and visual execution were absolutely great. Then they went straight into Sympathy - a tremendous segue that the crowd went crazy for. But reception to 2000 Light Years was not wild.

'I'm Movin' On' from December's Children! The title itself, plus Mick's primal (or primate) scream ... not to mention that the first notes of 'I'm Alright' come creeping in at the very last millisecond, as if preparing us for more in the future. Highly (if unintentionally) symbolic - not to mention a riot of a song.
