The deal is they never replaced a FRIST class Musician who could flat out play and take the band to higher levels live. I think Keith and Mick gave Taylor the freedom live to play extended solos and enrich the material.Remember Jagger needed that soloist to take the band out of the 60's and into the 70's where soaring solos were important and competing with all those live acts at that time.Making pop songs in the studio became back seat and playing your material live was paramount.

I do play guitar and one guitar played in open tuning and one guitar played in standard concert with the same angular patterns and grooves is not difficult. Anyone can count down and play rhythm and figure out when to come in and out. These whole WEAVING thing is not hard and complex.Whats hard is IMPROVISATION and playing with VIBRATO.

I agree with Edward - Taylor's vibrato is truly a gift and not to many players played like Taylor did at his early age with the stones. Taylor came up with those beautiful melodies and I doubt clapton,beck and the rest could of played better then Taylor and that beautiful.
