Welcome to Volume 35 of the JoeRay Master Series...posting on my own username this time out.

This Stones concert in Cleveland, Ohio came full circle for me. In 1972, my mom took me (age 16) to see the Stones in the Akron Rubber Bowl on July 11th. That concert was opened by Little Stevie Wonder. I stood about 10’ from the stage and Mick. This day, I took my now 94-year-old Mom to see the Stones which was 52 years after the Akron Rubber Bowl concert and what a concert it was.

The concert was opened by Ghost Hounds, a band from Pittsburg. Though Cleveland gave them the respect a musician deserves, their music was not distinctive although the lead singer Savnt did his best to give distinction to a band that lacked any.

We originally had great seats in Row A of Section 109, but due to Mom using a wheelchair, we were escorted backstage to a platform above the field and closer to the stage which allowed great viewing for mom and taping for me. Our platform was about 15 rows back directly below the left columns of speakers; perhaps 30 feet from the stage and 10’ above the standing audience.

The Stones came on stage to an amazing ultra-HD background that provided one of the sharpest video backdrops I have ever seen. John Denver would have been jealous.
Starting with Start Me Up, the band was dressed in their formal best. This was a concert in the Home of Rock and Roll and the Stones spoke of their history in Cleveland many times during the concert. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is next to the Stadium and offered several exhibits to honor the Stones in Cleveland.

Jagger was in amazing shape for being almost 82 years young. He pranced around the field better than most Browns quarterbacks going back to Otto Graham. He spends several hours, three days a week in ballet and it showed. The intensity of the concert seemed to build all night long.

Musically, the new songs off Hackney Diamond, Angry, Whole Wide World and Tell Me Straight seemed to be extremely well played and accepted by the audience although Sweet Sounds of Heaven was omitted for Keith Richards to do a third solo song.

The Stones came to Cleveland 5 days before the concert and were seen around town often dining at local restaurants.

The band was led by: CHUCK LEAVELL on Piano, DARRYL JONES on Bass, STEVE JORDAN on Drums, MICK JAGGERS-Lead Vocals, RONNIE WOOD and KEITH RICHARDS on Lead Guitar, BERNALD FOWLER and CHANEL HAYNES on vocals, TIM RICE on Sax.

The recording gear was brought into the stadium through the metal detectors compliments of my Mom’s wheelchair. This included my Sony PCM-D10 recorder, DBA 4060 stereo mics with preamp, a camera, battery packs, extra hard drives and a tripod all waived through with the wheelchair, thanks mom. The audio was combined using IZOPOPE 11 on MacBook Pro M2 and then mjk5510 put the final touches to bring it home.

All said, it was a special night out in the Home of Rock and Roll-Cleveland with the Rolling Stones, my Mom and family. At 94 she continues to enjoy her love of live music and gets out to clubs and theater at least twice a month. LIVE MUSIC KEEPS YOU YOUNG.
