Who Breaks a Butterfly on a Wheel? - BBC Radio 2 Documentary

Broadcast on BBC Radio 2 - 03 July,2007.
Presented by Bob Harris

Looking at the events and repercussions surrounding a highly publicised drug bust on a party held in 1967 at Redlands - Keith Richards' Sussex country home.
The story of the Rolling Stones' traumatic summer of 1967 is told in Who Breaks A Butterfly On A Wheel.
The programme – which takes its name from an article in The Times, written by its traditionally conservative editor William (now Lord) Rees-Mogg – looks at the events and repercussions surrounding a highly publicised drugs bust on a party held at Redlands, Keith Richards's Sussex country home.
William Rees-Mogg questioned the outcome of the court case in which Richards and Jagger were handed custodial sentences for first-time offences that were, according to Rees-Mogg, harsher than "any purely anonymous young man" would have
received, due to their celebrity status.
The programme includes interviews with Lord Rees-Mogg and Andrew Loog Oldham, former manager of the Stones.
Bob Harris takes us back to the Rolling Stones' least favourite summer: 1967 saw Mick and Keith sentenced for possessing drugs. It's an enthralling retelling of one of rock's most famous tales and a decent slice of social history.

Cops and Rockers
It was the summer of love and the establishment seemed hellbent on breaking the Stones. But what did the police really find the night they raided Keith Richards's cottage? Alan Travis sifts newly released documents to unravel a tale of men in make-up, pink ostrich feathers and a lady in a rug.

The Guardian piece is a good one.
"The West Sussex police...asked Scotland Yard to help them out by sending down to the Chichester trial one of the leading lights of the drugs squad, Detective Inspector John Lynch, to testify that where you find incense and joss sticks you usually find people smoking cannabis."
Idiocy like this suggests that it was the Boys in Blue who were on drugs. And if Lynch is "one of the leading lights of the drugs squad', can't he come up with anything better than this drivel about incense and cannabis?
