THE ROLLING STONES
ROCK AND ROLL CIRCUS Sessions
10 – 12 December 1968
FP 135
This project was initiated by nzb who sent me a video with rehearsals from the Dirty Mac. This caught my attention to go through all the versions that circulate.
I decided to keep only the parts where Stones members participate and to present them with some comments coming from the radio program ‘The Lost Lennon Tapes’ (published by the Walrus label).
The Lost Lennon Tapes was an American music documentary series presented by Elliot Mintz, comprising a three-hour premiere episode and 218 one-hour episodes, broadcast on the Westwood One Radio Network between the 24th January 1988 and the 29th March 1992 (so before the Rock And Roll Circus was officially released, which was not before October 1996).
The sources kept are from the “ROCK’N’ROLL CIRCUS SESSIONS” published by ‘Original Master Series’ (OMS) and from a video rip coming from ‘Hallucination’ (thanks a lot!).
01 - A presentation from the program
02 - Mick Jagger and John Lennon introducing the Dirty Mac with an a capella snippet, Julian Lennon voice and the rehearsal sequence presentation
03 - YER BLUES (rehearsal) from Nagra reel (OMS)
04 - Mick Jagger and John Lennon introducing the Dirty Mac (OMS) merged version
05 - YER BLUES (take 1) from Nagra reel (OMS) with some off-mike vocals
06 - YER BLUES (take 1) (OMS) vocal track
07 - YER BLUES (take 1) merge from both previous files
08 - YER BLUES (take 2) mono mix with count-in (OMS), completed by the radio program with journalist explanations
09 - John Lennon and Ethan Russel (photographer) comments over HER BLUES (a/k/a ‘Whole Lotta Yoko’)
10 - John Lennon introducing The Rolling Stones (more complete)
11 - PARACHUTE WOMAN (rehearsal 1)
12 - PARACHUTE WOMAN (rehearsal 2) first seconds missing, channel equilibration, equalization
13 - YOU CAN’T ALWAYS GET WHAT YOU WANT (rehearsal) both circulating versions are coming from the same take but more or less complete and with different speed and fidelity
14 - YOU CAN’T ALWAYS GET WHAT YOU WANT from a file sent by “Hallucination”. This version is more authentic, as it was remixed for the official release in 1996, especially the first minute is very interesting for Brian’s guitar which can be heard here and Nicky Hopkins’ piano is also more present. This recording is now declicked and equalized (+10% to the left channel). There was a little gap at 2’09 (on ‘get’), I decided to patch it with one second coming from 3’23. The official version reveals the correct speed: this recording is now accelerated by +4,3%.
BONUS:
15 - Mick Jagger and John Lennon (‘a capella’-sequence) merge from both OMS versions
16 - JUMPING JACK FLASH merge from stereo and video versions from OMS
17 - PARACHUTE WOMAN merge (see 02b)
18 - NO EXPECTATIONS merge (see 02b)
19 - YOU CAN’T ALWAYS GET WHAT YOU WANT merge (see 02b)
20 - SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL (see 02b)
21 - SALT OF THE EARTH (see 02b) Keith first chorus reversed from the right to the left channel and after 4’20 it’s solely from the video source.
