A Word by progrockfan (creator of this set):
Cellophane Flowers is the Anthology I wish had been officially released, an Outtakes Greatest Hits if you will. It blends tracks from official releases, bootlegged studio reels, and a couple of tracks specially created (always from authentic session tapes) by enterprising sound engineers.
This set is an audio diary of the most complex and innovative studio sessions of the recording era. This is raw session tape for the most part, and not all songs are perfected. Many of these tracks feature the band at its hardest-rocking and most wildly experimental – some might say ‘indulgent,’ but this is the stuff I live for. You may or may not agree with my choices; if you don't, I encourage you to apply for a refund.
There are no covers; every song was written by John, Paul, and/or George, with George Martin also receiving one songwriting credit. One obscure early George solo track was added to give the Quiet One a presence on the first disc. All tracks were either unreleased at the time or are strong alternate versions of great songs you already know, often under their original titles. The sheer range of the band, the breadth of styles on display, is astonishing; to hear Paul take the journey from Helter Skelter to Step Inside Love at the same sessions … well, you’ll hear it for yourself.
I know the world of Beatlegs as well as anyone, and I auditioned hundreds of hours of tape for this project; I've been tinkering with it for years. The sound quality of the bootlegged reels is the best that can be found outside the vaults at Abbey Road Studios, most of it sourced from first-generation transfers direct from the original master reels. For several tracks I eschewed flat-sounding, noise-reduced official versions in favor of recordings with more tape hiss or peak distortion, but a superior raw rock ‘n’ roll sound. Most of the tracks are in true stereo, but sometimes a mono take was too Fab not to include. The material is essentially in chronological order, but I’ve tried to sequence the discs like a ‘real’ Beatles double album, with decent sonic flow and appropriate endings for each disc. True to actual band practice from 1967 on, the gaps between tracks are as short as I could make them whilst leaving the individual tunes distinct unto themselves.
A note on Sour Milk Sea: This track, written by George, was crafted from a combination of George's Esher demo and Jackie Lomax's studio track. Jackie's voice has been erased; George sings and plays acoustic guitar on his demo, and the studio track, produced by George, features Paul on bass, Ringo on drums, Eric Clapton (who played on While My Guitar Gently Weeps) on lead guitar, and Nicky Hopkins (who played on Revolution 1) on piano. It's as close to a true Beatles version of this great song as can be crafted by clever hands.
This set is not and will never be available for sale or trade anywhere in the world, and I hope it's OK if I ask you to reserve it for your own exclusive enjoyment. There's some astonishing stuff on here, and compiling it was a revelation even for a hardcore fan like me.
I hope you enjoy it!
