Rolling Stones, The / Paris 1970 2nd Night Soundboard / 1CD / Non Label

Palais des Sports, Paris, France 23rd September 1970 SBD(UPGRADE)

The 1970 European tour boasts high popularity among enthusiasts due to its wonderful performance content and attractive set list, although it has the impression that it is not blessed with a sound source among the Stones’ 70s live performances. The reprint of the classic Rubber Dubber masterpiece that has conveyed its charm for a long time is still fresh in our minds, such as the huge hit “EUROPEAN TOUR LIVE 1970”, but the one that has been popular for a long time as the only soundboard from this tour is Paris performance.
During this tour, three stages were held in Paris, and the show on September 23rd, the middle day of the tour, was broadcast on a French radio station. As a result, a very valuable soundboard recording that recorded this tour, although monaural, was left behind.
However, despite being broadcast on the radio, the original sound source was never released during the LP era, and its existence was revealed in 1993 with the release of “PARIS 1970” on the Gray Seal label. Even though the jacket was extremely lackluster (lol), it sold out quickly since it was a 70 European soundboard. However, for many enthusiasts, it was probably a familiar soundboard from VGP label’s “SOME LIKE IT HOT!”, which used tapes in good condition. In fact, the VGP edition became a bestseller after a bestseller, and as it was released, the sound quality was gradually adjusted as it was released, including subtitles such as “SHAKE YOUR HIPS” instead of just reprints.

The presence of the VGP edition was so huge that the fact that all the titles that appeared after that that recorded the main broadcast were copies of the VGP edition showed its excellence. However, there is a problem that cannot be overlooked on the VGP version, and that is that a mysterious electronic sound called “P” has slipped into “Stray Cat Blues”, “Little Queenie”, and “Brown Sugar”. This problem was extremely frustrating as the original Gray Seal version had no such noise at all. In the first place, although it is the biggest standard sound source in Europe for 70 years, it is strange that no item that exceeds the VGP board with such problems has appeared until now.
It is true that the original was an air check tape of the broadcast in 1970, so the fact that the sound board had a vintage feel may have been a factor in why a new version did not appear. Another reason is that the last two songs of this air check were not recorded, and that they were supplemented with an air check sound source of inferior sound quality that you can tell at first listen that the sound was picked up from a radio speaker. I guess it was. Because the sound output from the speakers was turned up and recorded, the sound board, where the strength of the sound is clearly defined, was distorted beautifully.

“GRAF ZEPPELIN” rose up to play such standard sound sources. Rather than copying the VGP releases that have been around for a long time and subsequent copies, they have dared to go back and restore the sound source to the original material.
Although it was originally a vintage air check, VGP reflected the trends of the time and each edition was equalized to a greater or lesser extent to give it a unique finish, whereas this time it has a natural and rustic finish. Recorded with the same AM radio feel. In addition, cuts that were obscured by the VGP edition were recorded without unnecessary editing, so you can feel that this is a release that stands out from other VGP copy editions.
In addition, the pitch deviations that could not be fully addressed on the VGP version are recorded in a more accurate state, and this is noticeable in “Brown Sugar” in the latter half of the live performance. Furthermore, the pitches of the two songs recorded by speakers, where the sound quality deteriorates, have been carefully adjusted. And above all! There is no electronic sound, which was a drawback in each VGP version, and you can feel that a higher-level master is used here as well.

In this way, GRAF ZEPPELIN has thoroughly restored the classic AM radio broadcast soundboard. At the end, songs that were partially rebroadcast in the 1990s are also included as a bonus. “Sympathy For The Devil” ends from the narration after 4 minutes, but fortunately “Brown Sugar” is complete. In terms of sound quality, it naturally exceeds Air Check, but if you listen to it, you can clearly see that it was originally a monaural recording with a vintage feel. And above all, it is a big attraction that you can enjoy the sound unique to the 1970 tour, which has evolved from the dark sound of the previous year to a bright and energetic sound, on the sound board.
It’s a shame that the two Ako sets were not recorded on the soundboard, as they were dropped from the set before they reached Paris, and they were played in a brighter atmosphere, a complete change from the previous year. It’s special to be able to listen to the 70-year-old Stones on the sound board, which has evolved into the “STICKY FINGERS” mode by adding the horn team and even new songs before release.
Among them, the speedy performance of “Brown Sugar” has a unique momentum that is completely different from the regular performance after 1971 and the live premiere in the hustle and bustle of Altamont. clean sound. And above all, the coolness of the repertoire “Roll Over Beethoven” that represents the 1970 tour! The second day in Paris, which is the only soundboard of the 70-year tour now and in the past, has been wonderfully upgraded by “GRAF ZEPPELIN”!

What is the sound quality here ? I have the 1970 French broadcast but the sound is muddled and you can hear the announcers talking over songs. Is you version a better sounding sound?

This is the other show from Sept. 23. There is no radio speaker here. The sound is as usual (e. g. Some Like It Hot from VGP), by far not perfect but listenable. It is 100% mono, both channels are exactly the same.
