Notes:The Richards photo used for the insert of this LP probably copied from the color photo of this Japanese magazine cover found on page 170 of the Dalton/Karnbach/Beach book "The First Twenty Years".
Seeder's comments:Well, for me this may have been the one that started it all. When I discovered this record I must have listened to it hundreds of times. This was maybe the first bootleg album that I owned and boy did I get my moneys worth on this one, lol. This is a great record! The sound quality is passable but little more. I know that there are much better recordings of some of these songs but others I don’t believe I’ve seen anywhere else.
This was a 2 record album.
The first side starts with several tunes from Longview Farms in the early 80’s. Keith is tickling the ivories and singing with so much soulful passion that you can sense the emotion oozing out of the vinyl. Bobby Keys is along and adds to the atmosphere with his great playing. There are tracks here from Compass Point Studios recorded for the Emotional Rescue sessions as well. On “Little T & A” we get Keith trying to flesh out the unfinished lyrics. Listen to the cool phrasing reminiscing of Dylan and check out Keith’s great harmony with himself on the second chorus. “What a Feeling” is another great slow tune and when Keith sings the words “It must be Love, although it’s bitter” you feel it. Check out the smooth groove on “I Let You Know” and also Mick Jaggers backing vocals on “It Won’t Be Long.”
Side 3 of the record starts off with another version of “Over the Rainbow” but Keith has added guitar to his piano (Bobby Keys also adds a nice harmony sax part at one point). “The Nearness of You” may become one of your favorites here, be careful, lol. “Truly” is another great song. Like many tunes on this part of the album it is a reggae number. The album ends pretty much as it began with Keith on the piano.
I have not seen this in a long time and never on CD (it’s too bad, too). I converted this from vinyl so there are pops and cracks like my “Toronto Blues” disc but don’t let that scare you. Grab this one, it’s a must have. Quality of the material is first rate, fidelity is lacking but listenable. After I got this record I have spent the last 20 or more years trying to get these songs in better quality . . . what a loser I am, lol. Enjoy!
