What a gloriously ramshackle bunch. grinning smileysmoking smileyhot smiley

Hah, Charlie looking very much like he's in the midst of a full on mid-life crisis. grinning smiley

Keith seems the most scariest, but at the same time most approachable and open.

Ace footage.

Quite an eye-opener.
Keith and Mick in their RHD (UK registered) cars and both of them driving.
I get the impression that most of the footage was made early in the morning, after all-night sessions. Keith's dad (older guy with the pipe) looked as if he was enjoying himself.

Uh, those last few minutes were very sad to me.
No judgement particularly. The din of all that constant FAME and
endless demands. Constantly and more, since their teen-age years
puts those guys off in a world only they, and
The Beatles and Elvis; and Sinatra would have a clue about...

....but it was sad to me; sor of very sleepy or on the nod...
...i guess it's up to interp. maybe he was exhausted
and just taking a nap; but you know, it looked like those kinds of naps
that were eventually largely responsible for
eventually consuming Charlie too, for a period, as it had done Jimmy Miller
and Mick Taylor; a big loss for the band, as was Miller;
(God knows the poly-pharmacy im Brian's tragic demise)...that's another days grief.

Nice, however, to see in spite of it all, their natural instincts seem to
be striving to accomdate the fans; little looks and nods from K,
assurances...a sensitive guy i think, in spite of all the manufactured,
and I guess some deserved, if not self-created, trashy press.

I've heard stories, not sure about their veracity; that Shirley literally
pulled Charlie out of there; which would explain his lack, as well as Bill's,
on a lot of DW.
Ronnie and Keith spat out some fire in spite of everything else....
i didn't know for years why DW just seemed shockingly irrelevant shortly
after awhile, tho I love Shuffle and actually a few on there...

...but as an LP I never warmed up to it. Now being here, and all
this time gone by; I see that my instincts were sort of tuned to them,
and I did not know I wasn't getting Charlie and Bill when I was listening
to it.
There they were on the cover.
That was/is a BIG difference from the other ways they recorded,
regardless of how diverse those settings.

I distincly remember feeling the drums were 'steely,' as I put it back then.
That it just off, mechanic, loud steely snare with no soul and all that;
I mean I really felt let down for the first time with that one, tho
I still enjoy tracks from it that I particualrly like; and i have some
alternate takes and tracks I like much better than the LP, cause
they showcase the guitar work and etc...
...I didn't know what was 'up' with them personally at ALL, but it
didn't sound right.

You can't take ONE of those guys away without the music going at least a little haywire, unless
it's a special song here and there, like the way Ron put together IORR, or Charlie
would not play on it but it was still great Stones.
Or K playing bass on a studio cut; or Ron. This was different.

According to Zentgraf Charlie is only missing on the KR song tracks. He was present most of the time - maybe that was part of the problem.

hmmmm; ty. i'm not sure who's on what for sure on DW.
I think it's credited in a general way, rather than track by track...
I've been warned-off Keno's reliability by some I trust here....
curious tho.

Fantastic footage! I watched all of that and thoroughly enjoyed. Strange to see Mick and Keith drivIng such knackered UK registered old bangers and Ronnie a Peugeot 205 followed by a Renault 5, claiming to his audience that the former had been nicked.

We get a brief glimpse of Stu at the beginning, just months before we sadly lost him, Keith’s Dad as already said and Chuck too. I didn’t see Bobby. Bill was hardly to be seen. I’m surprised at how approachable they were, even Mick, though he looked a bit peed off at times.

LOL what great footage. Charlie, what a bad ass! When he's out front the building, and shoves that tape in his pocket. Some guy messing with Charlie's face haha...
Keith - not too often you see him drive. Keith and Mick both driving on he right - in Paris! Did Keith have Bert in the Bentley?

Sure did. Thst was Bert. At the very end you can see him shuffling across the road with his walking stick. This was at the time of Charlie’s substance issues so probably explains why he’s a bit spaced out.

I wonder if Ronnie's transportation compared to Mick & Keith's is a reflection of his "hired-hand" budget.

I was just thinking the same, how the size/type of car correlates with the status in the group ... grinning smiley

I thought for a moment one could see Bill from behind but maybe I'm wrong.

Wow! Ronnie and Jo could have had their own reality show. I forgot how young they looked back then. Its to bad they couldn't get it together and toured in 1986.

The clip that is the most stunning to me is the one where Charlie holds the book that a fan gave him to sign. A mute Charlie looks at the book, turns the pages while the French fans next to him start to giggle, laugh, they make small comments on Charlie strange demeanor and Watts is oblivious to what is around him. He doesn't pay attention at all to the camera and the young French people; he is totally channeling Buster Keaton!

...hence the song "999" on Main Defender? Or is it just pure satanism?

Rollmops: I don't know about that. My impression is that Charlie has been like that all the time. A bit aloof and absentminded. At least he gives that impression.

Yes Stoneage you are right but here it is very extreme. Anyway Charlie Watts is great.

I never said that. The "great" was referring to the footage in general.

I have always loved this album. I was twenty at the time and loved to play along to One hit, Fight, Had it with you...and so on...fridays when I came home from the factory...March, april I remember! My neighbours probably didn´t like Dirty Work. And now I understand it even more - it´s the Red Bentley-album!

Bill is at 12'04 I think (very short). But he wasn't there every day as it seems.

Bill was there at 98 percent of the time.
