The Alternate Satanic... and the Cosmic Christmas were not very easy to fully enjoy. But I already heard all the outtakes from that album, so I knew what to expect.
The Some Girls set is a really great compilation, it even has some of the different takes from the 8-track tape, which was nice to hear.
Some Girls could have been a great and balanced double album if they've spent more time on it. The tracks on Side 4 and 5 and 6 are still raw, but they had the potential. Everlasting Is My Love stands out for me. Munich Hilton is loose, but great. The blues numbers are really enjoyable.
It's a shame that most of these tracks (So Young being the only exception, if I am correct) were not included on the expanded CD.
I am very unhappy with the amount of previously unreleased songs the Stones have put out over the years (with Stones Vault being the only exception -- those are some really great stuff). And I hate that they added new parts to older takes pretending that it was 1972 or 1978. Half-hearted releases...
They could have done something like The Black Box. Or for the expanded editions they could have involved Bill Wyman who probably has a pretty good overview of songs that remained in the can.
Seeing all the amazing expanded editions from other musicians and bands (Dylan, Beatles, Zappa, Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys, Velvet Underground, Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Sex Pistols, Taste, Pink Floyd, The Who, and the list goes on), The Stones' new deluxe or super deluxe editions are a huge disappointment to me...
This box set shows how much better the official expended Some Girls could have been...
