Did this 69 show ever happen?

Can't believe I've never noticed this. According to the original concert poster there was a second show at San Diego on the 11th Nov at 2:30pm

No, they went to Phoenix instead on the 11th.

Thats true but wasnt Phoenix a night show? I mean with this poster saying "2:30 PM" performance its realistic that it could happen. I'm not saying it DID, just that it COULD.

The San Diego poster has been discussed here long time ago, I think it was offered on Wolfgang's Vault.
As much as I wish there was one more 69 show and somebody would post the tape here,
I don't think it happened, even though the Stones were used to a hectic schedule from their previous tours.
They made a stop in Las Vegas between San Diego and Phoenix, see below from Michael Lydon's "The Rolling Stones discover America", which I had posted years ago on "Tell Me"
btw,hope you're doing fine Scotty!

Just found this on Shidoobee

Quote

Music-history books and websites report that the Rolling Stones visited San Diego ten times to date, but tour posters and handbills have turned up that shed light on a little-known 11th concert a matinee on November 11, 1969. San Francisco music archive Wolfgang's Vault has a Randy Tuten-designed, 14" X 22" Rolling Stones concert poster for November 10, 1969, at the San Diego International Sports Arena. The poster is amended at the bottom, "By Popular Demand, Second Show, 2:30 p.m., Tues., Nov. 11." Indicating the rarity of these advertisements, an Oakland Coliseum poster for November 9 sells for $289; the San Diego edition, which uses the same image, will set you back $2115.

Katherine Hall, spokesperson for Wolfgang's Vault, is at a loss for the show's exclusion from music-history sites but insists it did take place. "The Bill Graham database holding the booking files does show San Diego on the 10th of November and the 11th of November, as does our poster. Bill Graham was a serious person, not one to book a show or state there's a show and not put it on." According to Sports Arena general manager Ernie Hahn, the arena doesn't have records regarding the show, though he can confirm seeing the show on Graham's database. While the November 10, 15-song set has been extensively bootlegged, nothing from a possible second show has surfaced.

The confusion likely stems from the fact that the Stones played at the coliseum in Phoenix, Arizona, on November 11, 1969. However, on this tour, they did play more than one show in several cities, and it's only a one-hour-and-ten-minute flight from San Diego to Phoenix.

Also on Shidoobee it's noted they stopped off in Las Vegas on the way back from Phoenix

That doesn't make sense at all since the next stop was Dallas, why go back to Vegas?

Well, Dallas wasnt until 2 days after Phoenix and The Stones were based out of LA for the 69 tour, were they not? Just a thought...

FWIW, there is no mention of the purported November 11 matinee in the contemporary issues of the main San Diego daily newspaper. The review of the November 10 show says it started 11:30 in the evening, which suggests an end time at nearly 1:00 the next morning. Such a time could get them into Vegas via plane for the 3:00 am casinos stop mentioned in the book pages above.

It seems very unlikely they would have finished a San Diego show at 1:00 am, wandered through Vegas at 3:00 am, and then gone *back* to SD for a 2:30 matinee before making a confirmed evening show in Phoenix.

My take: the 2:30 matinee in San Diego did not occur.

It does

I could have been doubly specific, even though "matinee" indicates afternoon:

My take: the 2:30 (pm) matinee in San Diego did not occur.

Interesting question. Should ask Ron Schneider. He's probably around here somewhere. Below is a earlier post from him about vegas.

Hi Ron Schneider here... I found and enjoy this site so I wanted to clarify some of the stuff.. As to why I have silly video games.. I have them there for my grandson, ARi, he's 10 and loves to play online video games. I thought it would be nice if he could come to my site and 'hangout'.
Jo/Georgia Berman is doing well, I saw her at Ethan's book signing for Let It Bleed.
Those shots from Vegas came about in an interesting way. We had picked up Phoenix, AZ as a last minute date on the tour and had a chartered, I believe Boeing 707(I'm not great with dates so anybody can correct that as I proceed)The Promoter didn't promote and it wasn't a total sell out, so we were pissed and then our pilot says that we don't have to have the plane back until 8:00AM the next morning, and would we like to stop anywhere between Phoenix and LA..and so it began.
PS...the 707 had over 120 seats, I believe..we came there with about 8 of us and left with a full plane...

The gambling in Vegas was on the night of November 11/12 so AFTER
the Phoenix show and NOT before...

Yes thank you FRANCKY that's how I understood it, the scan of the newspaper article earlier on in this thread conflicts with another article I read somewhere online which states the stop in Vegas was after the Phoenix show. Not to mention the Ron Schneider post from 2009 "would we like to stop anywhere between Phoenix and LA". also the fact the Bill Graham database shows bookings for San Diego on the 10th and 11th. Seems like there's plenty of evidence to back this show up. So it's plausible that a 2:30PM matinee performance in San Diego on the 11th took place.

I decided to email Ron Schneider and I just got this reply.

Hi Dan

I didn't see the debate... the Vegas stop was an impromptu stop on the return from Phoenix--- Phoenix hadn't sold out as the promoter picked it up late and didn't promote so it was a bit disappointing.  The only way to enliven the moment was a stopover in Vegas.  The captain said it was no problem as it was in route to our destination. The afternoon show seems to stir a bit of a memory but I would have to check all my papers to confirm..

Based on that note, that Phoenix was a late add, it reasonable that the 2nd SD show was a late drop. I also read that the memorial coliseum had no record of a show on the 11th.

Haha yes I guess it's a good job they are Ron otherwise we could of opened another tin of worms!

So it's looking more and more likely that we have our missing show! I also got your last email where you said "I do remember being in San Diego for an extended period".

Just another quick thought let's throw the question out there does anyone on here remember attending the 2:30 show at San Diego on the 11th?

I think all we have to do is wait another three months, until the new Stones book arrives!
It's supervised by the Stones, so all open questions will be answered by then!

To quote:

Ten dollars to the church of the sacred bleeding heart of Jesus
Located somewhere in Los Angeles, California
And next week they'd say my prayer on the radio
And all my dreams would come true

To help with this question, I consulted local microfilm of a San Diego underground paper of the time, San Diego Free Door. Their November 6, 1969 issue has this ad, which states the "only" SD show was the 8:30 pm on November 10.

This suggests the planned November 11 afternoon show was indeed dropped and did not occur.

It was an add on show due to popular demand according to the concert poster. Besides have you not read the input from Ron Schneider?

It's great to hear from Ron Schneider, but his uncertain recollection from 40 years ago - "The afternoon show seems to stir a bit of a memory but I would have to check all my papers to confirm" - is not particularly strong. Still, with the BG anticipatory poster in hand, it's worth a shot looking for proof of a lost San Diego matinee. Heck, I like looking for lost shows, having unearthed a few from the 1972 tour (e.g., Denver and St. Louis twin bills) via press research.

My doubts about the SD 1969 2:30 show taking place come from the fact that the local press outlets throughout October and November 1969 mention only the November 10 show. An add-on show would have needed ticket sales, and announcements of such are nowhere to be found. Even up to the day of the November 10 show (and afterwards) there is no reference to a November 11 show, no review of the second show, and no stories about the inevitable police arrests.

I suspect the BG poster was made on spec in hopes of a 2nd San Diego show, but for whatever reason the concert got ditched (and was never even publicly announced) later on.

Best regards,

Harold

I want to thank all those who contributed to this thread!
My comment yesterday wasn't meant to be disrepectful!
I was just trying to ironic about what the real Stones fan can expect from the forthcoming book.
Probably was in a bad mood as well!

I was looking through some of the newspaper articles on Keef1966 site yesterday's papers and I came across this rather interesting article from one of the Detroit shows (my guess the second).

See the show count below

(1) 7 Moby Gymnasium, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado
(2) 8 The Forum, Inglewood, California
(3) 8 The Forum, Inglewood, California
(4) 9 Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Arena, Oakland, California
(5) 9 Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Arena, Oakland, California
(6) 10 San Diego International Sports Center, San Diego, California
(7) 11 San Diego International Sports Center, San Diego, California
(8) 11 Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum, Pheonix, Arizona
(9) 13 Moody Coliseum, Southern Methodist University, University Park, Texas
(10) 14 Memorial Coliseum, Auburn University, Auburn, Alabama
(11) 14 Memorial Coliseum, Auburn University, Auburn, Alabama
(12) 15 Assembly Hall, University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, Illinois
(13) 15 Assembly Hall, University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, Illinois
(14) 16 International Amphitheatre, Chicago, Illinois
(15) 16 International Amphitheatre, Chicago, Illinois
(16) 24 Olympia Stadium, Detroit, Michigan
(17) 24 Olympia Stadium, Detroit, Michigan

Now I've even included the "missing" 11th Nov San Diego to make up numbers. It appears we're still 2 short. I've read on several occasions about a planned show at The Forum on the 20th that was apparently cancelled, or was it? and was it 2 shows and not 1?. The only show that I've found evidence of being cancelled from the entire tour is the 4:30pm show on the 25th at The Spectrum.

Anybody else have any info or thoughts about this?

I 'm pretty sure the LA 20th show was played. One source I found quikly that verifies it is "IORR-The Ultimate Guide..."(Karnbach-Bernson). I also believe I have 2 or 3 tracks claimed to be from this show on a cassette given to me by a long time trader years ago. I'll have to dig thru my tapes and see if I can find it or if its my imagination!

Also found it verified in Bill's "Rolling With The Stones" and"The Rolling Stones Album-Thirty Years Of..." (Giuliano)

Hello Scotty!

Sorry but I'm afraid Karnbach is wrong here, don't think the LA show happened.

See also here, again from "The Rolling Stones Discover America" by Michael Lydon:

"With Chicago down and the tour more than half done, the Stones fly back to LA for a week's break."
