Post: 'Gravestones' & 'Rape Of The Vaults' (Black-box vinyl - tape - transfer) [FLAC]
Posted by: rubycatgirl ()
Date: August 20, 2011 21:55

My tape recording of the two LP's has its origin somewhere in the eighties.
A friend of my parents - a huge Elvis collector - borrowed this box from an
aquintance of his and for me to tape it while I was over for the weekend.
I had five tapes and some 10 or 12 LP's to record (e.g., 'Nasty Music', 'JD
On Tour', a.o.) so I had to make some choises. One of them was to tape only
the second and third Black-box' LP and skip the first ('Beautiful Delilah').

Recently I was intrigued by the Black-box 3LP vinyl rip (mp3) (see, [www.iorr.org] )
but I was, to be honest, a bit disapointed by the quality of those mp3's. It seemed that,
to my taste, way too much was "declicked" and noise "reducted", thus resulting in all
kinds of digital high-pitched sounds making it sound way too "mechanic".

Not that my tapes are so great but at least they have that old bootleg "feel".
Anyway, I transfered my tapes with the second and third LP of the Black-box to
digital, and here they are. Actually I made two versions: one is just the "raw"
transfer, the other has been (manually - not "generic" ) noise reducted, slightly
eq'ed and adjusted to more or less equal volume levels all over (no clipping!).
This to provide this vinyl transfer in a more "natural" way.
There is, for instance, the tape itself which has "obscured" the vinyl - which wasn't
actually pristine to begin with - with some extra crackles and tiny drop-outs.
Obviously, the tape has generated a lot of extra noise. Other issues that justify eq'ing
are needle pressure (too little or too much) and the overall decay. Again, I did
my best to provide the orignal bootleg in its own sound. This also means that for
'best versions' of the presented outtakes one has to look for other sources!

One final warning (wow, that sounds if it is all really bad while it is pretty much fun
actually!): I have not speed-corrected any of the tracks. In most cases it isn't
actually needed and it would destroy the original bootleg idea from which it all
started. Also, any speed-correcting would simply be my best guess based on
quarters, thirds and halfs of semitones and listning to what I think sounds right.
However, 'Cherry Oh Baby' and 'Parachute Woman' are quite terrible... (that was
the warning!). (But, as a "bonus", I will also upload my speed corrections of these
two songs). And CS Blues sounds as if it is running ellipses... Hard to correct anyway.
(And this is how I first came to know this song: with an even more sinister sounding...).

Files (in seperate tracks) are converted to FLAC and "upped" to Megaupload.

Black Box - vinyl "raw" : [www.megaupload.com]

Black Box - "cooked" (or "processed", if you like) : [www.megaupload.com]

Perhaps I have mixed the titles 'Gravestones' and 'Rape Of The Vaults'*; spelling of
the titles is according to the Black-box insert.

'Gravestones':
01- Ain’t That Loving You Baby?
02- Mona (I Need You Baby)
03- Don’t Lie To Me
04- If You Need Me
05- Oh Baby, We Got A Good Thing Goin’
06- It’s All Over Now
07- Little Red Rooster
08- The Last Time
09- It Should Be You
10- Play With Fire
11- Everybody Need Somebody
12- You’d Better Move On
13- Bye Bye Johnny
14- Beautiful Delilah
15- Hey Crawdaddy

'Rape Of The Vaults'
01- All Down The Line
02- Melody
03- C.cksucker Blues
04- Black & Blue Jam
05- Brown Sugar
06- Too Many Cooks
07- Exile On Main St. Blues
08- Silver Train
09- Parachute Woman
10- You Can’t Always Get What You Want
11- Cherry Oh Baby
12- Ruby Tuesday
13- Sure The One You Need

RCG

PS: I did not "declick" any of the files... (it just "crackles" as it does!)

EDIT: * Yes indeed I mixed up the the two titles!

That's pretty cool. Did you buy the 'Black Album' / 'Black Box' or this 'Gravestones-Rape Of The Vaults' edition?
I'm actually looking for the Black Box artwork (which says 'Black Album' on the front - with the boxing girl - and
has the insert on which 'The Black Box' is stated). I only have a picture of it from the Guiliano, Not Fade Away, 1993
book (p.147). The insert, however, is partily hiding the boxing-girl picture. One can also see that the three vinyl's
are coloured orange, blue, and green. I would like to know which colour belongs to each of the three "programms"
(i.e. 'Beautiful Delilah', 'Gravestones', and 'Rape Of The Vaults'). Does anyone know?

Hi Rubycargirl,

You've been out for so long that I began to doubt in your reality.
And here you are again!
Seizing the opportunity may I ask you for reposting your
remaster of Enmore Theatre concert, Feb.18, 2003, Sydney?
I wonder how does it sound in comparison to VGP-342.

I haven't heard any of your legendary remasters.
Are there chances for any repost?

Thanks,
Greg

Hi Greg,

Contributing to 'legendary' stuff (remasters included!) is the fact that one only heared of it but never actually
sees it in reality! I am, of course, happy to fill your request and running the risk of losing the legendary status winking smiley

As far as the reality of myself is concerned, I'm still pretty much alive, just occupied with other things. I just
got myself a BA degree in Philosophy at the University of Amsterdam and currently enjoying the summer break!
(Just a few days and your be back in class...trying to get an "A"...pass!). I will continue my studies in September
as I am participating in a research master (MA). Untill then I'm just updating my iPod with the legendary stuff
of the true legends themself...

But I will try to keep in touch with the board as I can view and post the website from my brand-new Android cellphone. smiling smiley

After lisning to the remaster of Enmore I am affraid I will loose the legendary status immediatly:
too much saturation. I rather try to improve my attempt from 5 years ago as I still have the original cd-r's
that I aquired from a trade (I shall post those as well). Hope you'll allow me a few days to complete the challange... smiling smiley

Here's a link to 'It's Only Rock 'N Roll' from my Enmore remaster: [www.megaupload.com]

I think the clarity is good but, like I've said, it's too saturated - I shouldn't have set the volume levels that high -
it could be that these are from the cd-r source but this I will have to check. I will get back to you.

Cheers,
RCG

Many thanks, Rubycatgirl,

Whatever or whosever impressions will be, you certainly will retain
the highest grade for your artwork. Fantastic, really.
I'll be waiting patiently and impatienly for new remaster.
Meanwhile, if you like, please have a look at a place of my
neverending selfpromotion - www.torzecki.net

Best,
Greg

Nice website. I really like the pictures! (Too bad there isn't a Facebook "like-option" - which I would have used
immediatly! - that way your promotion could take a whole new level. You know, I "like" it, then some of my friends
check it out and might "like" it too. And then there friends check it out, etc., etc.)

Thanks for the artwork compliment! Appriciated. Unfortunately I don't have that much spare time left now.
I usually make one "front" image that I can use on my iPod. I virtually recreated the classic bootlegs!
(Although I'm now actually looking for a black carton box of 135x135x15 mm to create a 'Black Album' replica!)

PS: regarding the Enmore: my cd-r's, I suspect they are actually lossy (not that one can hear it though...).
The good news is that they sound pretty good as they are. The only thing needed (imho) is volume adjustment.
Stay tuned!

I'll think about Facebook link (I'm on it) though practically I'm not using it.
About September my friend will help me to do it.

I compared yours "It's Only R&R" with the one from VGP-342 and to my ears
there is not much difference. I have no idea about sound remastering nor
even sound saturation, so I don't know how difficult it is.
I would love to hear a version with Jagger's voice more on a foreground,
better enhancement of interaction between the band and audience reaction
and generally the whole sound more crispy.
Feasible?

Best,
Greg
