The great 1969 Tour - clean up your collection
Posted by: Eleanor Rigby ()

Hi all,

I'm sure alot of people on this board have been collecting Stones bootlegs for many years. Over the years better tapes have surfaced of shows and in our endless efforts to have everything we are left with 2,3,4 or even 5+ versions of the same show in our catalogue.

OK, in order for me to clean my collection up, I'm starting with 1969 US Tour.

I'm interested to know of what source is the best for each show of the Tour (if there's a website that has this info I apologise).

Any help would be much appreciated:

7th November: Fort Collins, Colorado, State University
8th November: Los Angeles, California, Inglewood Forum (1st show)
8th November: Los Angeles, California, Inglewood Forum (2nd show)
9th November: Oakland, California, Alameda Co. Coliseum (1st show)
9th November: Oakland, California, Alameda Co. Coliseum (2nd show)
10th November: San Diego, California, Sports Arena
11th November: Phoenix, Arizona, Coliseum
13th November: Dallas, Texas, Moody Coliseum
14th November: Auburn, Alabama, University Memorial Coliseum (1st show)
14th November: Auburn, Alabama, University Memorial Coliseum (2nd show)
15th November: Champaign, University Of Illinois, Assembly Hall (1st show)
15th November: Champaign, University Of Illinois, Assembly Hall (2nd show)
16th November: Chicago, Illinois, International Amphitheater (1st show)
16th November: Chicago, Illinois, International Amphitheater (2nd show)
24th November: Detroit, Michigan, Olympia Stadium
25th November: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Spectrum Sports Arena
26th November: Baltimore, Maryland, Civic Center
27th November: New York City, Madison Square Garden
28th November: New York City, Madison Square Garden (1st show)
28th November: New York City, Madison Square Garden (2nd show)
29th November: Boston, Massachusetts, Boston Garden (1st show)
29th November: Boston, Massachusetts, Boston Garden (2nd show)
30th November: West Palm Beach, Florida, International Raceway, 'Miami Pop Festival'
6th December: Livermore, California, Altamont Speedway

thanks

I still have to compare the Fort Collins.

Regarding Los Angeles:

First show: I compared WRAPPED UP IN LA SHOW - L.A.QUEENIE - WELCOME TO THE BREAKFAST SHOW.
I think WTTBS is the best one; all of them is supposed to be the same source and the track Little Queenie have a cut start.

Second show: I have BORN IN A CROSSFIRE HURRICANE and COCAINE ON A DENTIST CHAIR. Are two different sources and I suggest to keep both of them.

OAKLAND FIRST:

I have BRING IT BACK ALIVER and POT BOILER. The second is better quality but the beginning of "I'm free" is a remixing of the second show. Gimme shleter is missing but I'm not 100% sure it was played at Oakland First show.

OAKLAND SECOND:

I've many of this show but focused on 4 titles: REVOLUTION SIXTY-NINE - THE ORIGINAL LIVE(r) - LIVER THAN YOU'LL EVER BE - 1969 SOUNDBOARD COLLECTON.
I prefer LIVER THAN YOU'LL EVER BE also because it includes UMT and the audio quality is better.

SAN DIEGO:

SAN DIEGO '69 - IT'S NO HANGIN' MATTER - SECOND INCARNATION.
In my opinion San Diego '69 is the best one but in Second Incarnation there's the complete Sam Cutler show intro.

PHOENIX: I only know THE SKY PILOTS

DALLAS: I've three and can't say which one is the worst. Same source, same shitty audio.

There's a low-gen tape of the "Born In A Crossfire Hurricane" source available via torrents, thanks to mr. Watchit - it's a lot better than the bootleg...and the best source for this show.
(.....allthough the guitars are more upfront on the VGP source)

Can someone describe the Champaign imbroglio? WHat's 1st show and what's 2nd?

I thought both Chicago shows had surfaced...one complete and one incomplete??

I guess the thing about best source is that recent DIME stuff seems lower-gen than previous...so I'm keen to find out these sources.

For instance, my old Baltimore 1969 (Digger Productions) has been superceded by the complete Baltimore - which includes Street Fighting Man. Is DAC 015 the complete Baltimore show which they would have copied from the DIME torrent which appeared 1-2 years ago ?

I have the first & old version of Catch Your Dreams (Fort Collins)...has there been a lower gen tape since?

I also have a version of MSG 27th & 28th second show on a private tape. It includes 2 songs from Detroit 24th Nov in superb quality. Think this was a recent torrent..?

If anyone has links (either old or new) to these torrents....?

Thanks to the opinions of others above. I'll try and put in an updated list as we go !

Chicago 2nd Late show is only the show from the November 16th. The version I have is "Chicago 1969". It has 13 tracks. It sounds like it was taped from outside the arena bowl in the corridors. The 1st Early show has no extant tapes at this time.

Champaign had two shows the day before on the 15th of November. The 1st Early show has 13 tracks and 2nd Late show has 5 tracks extant.

A show I really enjoy is from Phoenix on November 11, especially when Mick and Keith begin the acoustic set. It is called "Gathering Madness Phoenix 69". But it drops off badly in Little Queenie.

Regarding DALLAS, I'm not an expert but I think that the available audio could be improved. I tried with Audacity and succeeded to reduce some backnoise in one track, but takes long time and I'm not really able.

PHOENIX: Sicilian, I don't know GATHERING MADNESS PHOENIX 69; did you compare with SKY PILOTS?

FORT COLLINS:

CATCH YOUR DREAMS has a problem of speed . It's a seminote higher and should be corrected.

KICK OFF THE US TOUR 69: I recently found this one and still have to verify it and compare with Catch your dreams.

CHAMPAIGN FIRST:

I compared 3 titles.
ANOTHER MAD DAY ON THE ROAD - COCAINE ON A DENTIST CHAIR - VINTAGE CHAMPAIGN: Vintage chamapign looks me the best quality. The source is the same and UMT is incomplete.

CHAMPAIGN SECOND:

2 titles: CHAMPAIGN SECOND SHOW - VINTAGE CHAMPAIGN: not bad, but incomplete. The audio quality is almost the same for both titles.

DETROIT:

I've only LIVE FROM DETROIT 1969 and 3 tracks (actually there are only 2 from Detroit) from 1969 SUNBOARD COMPILATION:

It's a medium-low audience rec. but, as far as I know, it's the only one available.

PHILADELPHIA:
I compared: PHILADELPHIA 69 - PHILADELPHIA SPECIAL 69 - SECOND INCARNATION.

Second Incarnation is the only title with the complete show. Philadlephia 69 is faster, one seminote higher, and many cuts in the intros. Also Special 1969 has many intro with cuts.

BALTIMORE:

I have BALTIMORE1969 - DEVIL's DISCIPLE - SOME SATANIC TOUR.

I've no doubt to say that the Some Satanic Tour is my suggested one. Little queenie is missing (was it played in Baltimore?)

WORDS OF WONDER: PLEASE HELP.
Here is the only extract I have of a book from Dieter Hoffmann Words of Wonder, which is out of print. This page was posted here by one of you.
I'm looking for a copy of this book 1969-1973, or a photocopy, or a scan on CD; I'll pay for it; if you have please contact me.

NEW YORK 27:

here my titles:

STONED MSG 1969 - COMPLETELY SQUARE - IT's NO HANGING MATTER - @#$%& YER YA-YA's OUT.

Stones MSG 1969 is in my opinion a VG audio. The other three titles are average. I would definitively go for Stoned MSG.

NEW YORK 28 FIRST:

TWO DAYS THREE SHOWS - NEW YORK CITY YOU TALK A LOT - bad quality; You tlak a lot is better than 2D3S but the speed should be corrected. 8 tracks only from this show.

NEW YORK 28 SECOND:

TWO DAYS THREE SHOWS - LIVE IN NEW YORK 1969 - SECOND SHOW
2D2S is bad audience;Live in NY is much better but there is a cut start in LIV.
Second show is fast; also this one should have the speed correcetd.

BOSTON FIRST:

Only one title BOSTON GARDEN '69, incomplete, missing Prodigal son and You gotta move, bad quality.

BOSTON SECOND:

BOSTON GARDENS SECOND SHOW - BOSTON GARDENS '69 - SOME SATANIC TOUR.
No competition; Some satanic Tour is the best one.

PALM BEACH:

MIAMI POP FESTIVAL - ONE DAY BEFORE ALTAMONT - Good audience. MPF is better.
I think this is another recording that could be improved by some expert.

Re: The great 1969 Tour - clean up your collection
Posted by: straycat58 ()
Date: February 14, 2009 12:51

ALTAMONT:

THE KILLER FESTIVAL - THERE's NO ANGEL BORN IN HELL.

I would go for the TKF; actually TNABIH looks has been mixed with some other shows, SFTD and UMT don't seems Altamont to me; I can be wrong.
Anyway, TKF should be the real recording.

so there is 2 different recordings of miami pop ?

i thought Miami was the same tape but one was better....not sure which one. VGP put out Miami Pop Festival...I have both it & Palm Beach 1969....think VGP is better.

MSG stuff is interesting...
The 27th show I received from a low-gen tape of the common tape...it is the best I have heard. Haven't really compared the 28th 2nd show with the 2 other CDrs of the show.

Regarding Altamont, there has recently been a recording that has it in stereo & more complete...it's better than the Killer Festival - same tape.

Thx for agreeng with me. Most MT-era IMP titles were sped-up.
If someone could re-pitch this important show it would be awesome!
