Just posted it as a curiosity, tatters. Though I thought it was a creative arrangement--doubt the sinister elements were lost on him, so much as he was bringing out other aspects of the song. It's so dramatic people tend to overlook the fact it actually has a great melody, for instance.

Anyway, C+.

A guilty pleasure or just a great tune?

Number 1 on the US and UK singles charts as well as in eighty other countries, it is one of less than thirty singles of all time to sell 10 million or more copies worldwide.

The song was written and produced by Harry Wayne "KC" Casey and Richard Finch of KC & The Sunshine Band, and the song was later an inspiration for the drum part in the ABBA song Dancing Queen. Sunshine Band guitarist Jerome Smith plays guitar on the backing track, which was recorded as a demo in 45 minutes.

The story went that Finch and Casey had recorded the song for The Sunshine Band, but couldn't reach the high notes needed for the track, so they asked George McCrae, who just happened to be in the studio at the time, waiting for his wife Gwen, whom he managed as well, but who was late for the session--it was originally intended that she sing on the record. The high notes suited George's voice perfectly, who at the time was singing on sessions and in clubs and was just about to return to college to study law enforcement, but instead....

For the first time in my life I suddenly saw the similarity between this song and Abba`s "Dancing Queen", but you said it before me.

Great song

George and Gwen McCrae also sang back-up vocals on half of Bill's Monkey Grip solo lp around the same time.

One of THE great songs, IMO. Total joy and a great come on.

I seriously remember Charlie saying he loved this song and would play it at his parties in the 70's

Having sold over 11 million copies (according to what I have seen online), I'm going with "great tune".

Written by the two core members of KC & the Sunshine Band. BTW, I saw KC & the Sunshine Band in (I believe) 2001 and they put on one hell of a show. Seriously. Booming bass, extra percussions (congas), large horn section, beautiful dancing girls, KC running around onstage -- it was great.

Um, sorry to go off topic there.

Remember cruzin' around New Orleans in a friend's Caddy partying to this one!

Some good soul records at the dawn of the disco era. My fave from that year is probably Al Wilson's "Show And Tell." Another good one; William DeVaughn's "Be Thankful For What You've Got."

wasn`t it the same year as "Kung Fu Fighting"? Whoever did that, some Carl Douglas or so. I remember feeling guilty liking both tunes, couldn`t own up to it to my friends.

Yep, a guilty pleasure if ever there was one. Betcha haven't heard the flop followup single, "Dance The Kung Fu." Gotta love the way the music industry always keeps beating a dead horse ....

KC did a vocal version too. Not as good.

As for the original the story I heard was that it wasn't meant for George but the original singer (maybe it was Gwen) couldn't do it.

The story goes that Gwen was slated to do it, but she was late for the recording session. George was there in the studio waiting for her to arrive, so he was asked to do it instead.

Wow - what motivated him to move there, did you ask? George is from *my* home town, West Palm Beach, Florida.

Love this song, and Gwen's smash hit from a year later. They were all on TK Records I believe.

Well, why not? The Stones covered Sam Cooke, so they were no strangers to soul classics themselves.
