I tried to think about it quite hard and I always came back to Mick Jagger. Honestly.

Otherwise I really like Bono's voice (when it is not gone) - don't throw stones at me. And who else?

I saw Paul Rogers the last week and he is a great singer, but he can not be compared to Mick as a frontman.

Michael Stipe is a great singer.

Dave Gilmour is also great.

Now Buddy Guy comes to my mind. It is impossible to compare, since they are all so different.

Oh yea and now - Dave Gahan - he is a great singer and also great performer. I think he can be compared to Mick as a frontman - in the way he can treat huge masses at stadiums. I think that Freddie Mercury, Mick Jagger and Dave Gahan are/were the best frontmen

But If I had to pick one, it would be Mick of course

Well, except for Jagger. If we just exclude Jagger, then
I'd say the dude from the Black Keys is not bad. People here who
say Jack White.. I don't know. I mean Jack White has obviously been smoking
cigarettes which does not do any voice good.
More recent examples are welcome.
I'm always into something new.

Can't forget Bono. The man can sing almost every style.

Since this has morphed to non modern singers,
I would add Paul McCartney, and amazing voicek with incredible range and style. And of course BOWIE, the man has pipes and his vibratto is sublime. Lennon, great vocalist, could shred great rock and sing tender ballads.

Jim James is a good call, he really displayed his range on EVIL URGES.

Love his singing on this one

Re: Best Current Lead Singer

For Rock Music, Jagger and Springsteen are the ONLY inspirational, singers, because there JUST aren't any "training schools" these days to "teach" or "learn", like there were, when these guys were getting their "bones" in Show Business.

Bono WAS a great singer, now being a Public Figure Who Writes A Newspaper Column, singing is his "backup" gig. What a horse's ASS he has become, believing his own, manufactured press releases !

Springsteen's very public, personal views, are excused by his TALENT and Class, as a human being.

Neil Young, not a SINGER, by ANY measure, is too busy being against Something, and constantly peddling his ARCHIVE bull ! He is reduced to doing Beatle cover of "A Day in the Life" to get attention to his tour. When they pull the Beatle Card, you KNOW it's hard times !

Re: Best Current Lead Singer

I agree with stonesmusicfan about Neil Young. He has done many great songs and albums, and I really WANT to like him more; put him up there with the bigest ones. But for just the reasons listed by stonesmusicfan I don't.
