Universal is saying that if these 5000 sets sell out early, they hope to announce
collection of previously unreleased materials from 1970s and 80s next January or February.

Just another marketing strategy.......

... Anything 'special' (I mean: musicwise) about these reissues- apart from being very well presented!?
Any missing gems, outtakes, ... etc.- anything in paarticular that seperates these isues from (the) previous ones?!
I must admit I don't have a very 'expereinced' eye for that...

This new Japanese release is based on the 2002 ABKCO Remastered Series - no remixes, no alternates, no demos, no outtakes! But you get a new collectable cardboard sleeve repackaging AND...this is the real difference...it's all on SHM-CD.

The Japanese replicas of vinyl covers, w/ their sturdy gatefolds, even the texture of the paper, etc, is admirable. Back in '97 I bought 20 or more (well, stole from Tower) Columbia Miles Davis reissues with brilliant sound and exquisite presentation - a couple years before many titles were remastered for the States. Also love my Led Zep "Presence" (the orig 'object' inner sleeve is perfect, but you can HOLD it and SMELL it much as you like because the CD has its own protective cloth sleeve! - I must contain my exitement so as not to make a big wet mess on this thread - II, III (yes the wheel!), etc are gorgeous. BUT the mid 90s masters. The Japanese discs themselves tend to be sturdier, thicker than US/UK cds....These RS reissues are likely the DSD (previously SACD) remasters from 2002 in lp packaging. Ususally even if unable to translate Japanese you can discern if they've remastered the albums. I have R Wood's 2 Sony albums (too bad his worst imo) in exquisite DSD remastering/cardboard sleeves. The 'obi card' incvluded over the spine usually will have something like "24 bit" or "DSD" amidst all that inscrutable script...

Anyway, I've been collecting for some 35 years now and I'm still addicted to vinyl but THIS is the real thing. Got it today and I must admit that I've never seen such a beautiful collection of music before in my life. It's wonderful and I can hardly find words to describe this item. Took some 500 Euro (incl. postage and tax) but it's worth every cent and I'm thinking of buying another copy to have a sealed one for the future. Just ordered the "missing" ones by the way and I'm sure they'll be a great addition to the box.

To each his own but if you can afford to buy it and if you happen to be a collector BUY it, you'll love it.

What is the difference between SACD and SHMCD? Can someone please explain? There's no way I'm shelling out for another version of their albums - I'm not even sure I'd do it for 2CD sets of the 70s stuff. Times are getting too hard and I'm looking to complete my music collection not have to rebuy it over..........and over..................and over.

SHM - Super High Material

Is that not the same as the SACD ones??? I seem to recall those having an extra layering in them too, no?? I'm talking about the mini lp replicas that just came out - I guess it'd be the 2002 Abkco remasters?

Not that I really know exactly, but I have read about SHM and from what I understand they should sound better than an ordinary CD and that on an ordinary CD player not like SACD that need a special player that can handle those records. A couple of years ago JVC also invented something they called XRCD which should sound so much better than an ordinary CD. To my ears and with my equipment I couldn't hear any difference at all. Maybe with better equipment
(high-end) and better ears (younger) I could have heard the difference. One must remember that the CD medium has it's inherent limitations, and also the recordings made 40-45 years ago. There are different ways to go round these, but the medium is still what it is. I've heard of few titles of the 2002 remasters in SACD and I can tell there is a slight difference between that layer and the ordinary DSD CD layer, but with SHM I don't know, but i shouldn't hope for any difference worth mentioning. However the box is very interesting for other reasons.

22 cd's - inbox 18 cd's ?...

In a moment of weakness and excitement I bought the Satanic and Beggars jewel cased SHM CD's which turned out to be quite expensive due to customs charges etc and... I can't hear any improvement over the ABKCO CD-SACD versions!

I only have a standard CD player, so I haven't heard the SACD layer from the 2002 remasters only the standard CD layer.

I don't own the 2002 SACD/CD versions anymore to A/B compare them, but if anything it seems as if the SHM Satanic sounds more muddy!? This could just be my mind/memory playing tricks though, but I seem to remember certain instruments on the 2002 CD/SACD release being clearer than they are on this SHM release.

Mind tricks or different mix! ?

The SHM Beggars Banquet sounds excellent, but so does the SACD/CD version.

Basically, it was a waste of money!
