The Altamont Concert Exists In It's Full Length On Film (Apparently).
Posted by: JumpingKentFlash ()

I got this article about Altamont from a website called Salon.com. It was linked through Wikipedia. On the last page there's a guy who worked on "Gimme Shelter" who states that "At one point the Maysles sent me tapes of the entire Stones performance uncut; it's out of a horror movie". This is maybe the most important moment of The Stones' career, and I really wish we could see it in it's full length.

Read it all here: [archive.salon.com]

yes, but I see in the Wikipeida entry under Gimme Shelter (documentary), this:

A young George Lucas was a camera operator for the Altamont concert. However, his camera jammed after shooting about 100 feet (30 m) of film, and none of his footage was incorporated in the final cut.[citation needed]

of course, one must be a little careful when it comes to Wikipedia.

I believe it would be feasible(?) that the entire altamont show would be filmed as well as at least one of the MSG shows? Also we know the Stones recorded the NYC shows and Baltimore sbs for sure, amd possibly Boston,Detroit and other east coast shows? GET OFF THE TAPES, KLEIN!!(or whoever controls it!) Or how bout Bill or Keith conveniently "losing" some tapes as they've always been known for collecting audio!

Albert Maysles has all of the footage of the Altamont show. He also has the entire MSG shows.

This screening was discussed before and they showed indeed a performance worth of previously unseen footage from MSG´69 incl. Midnight Rambler, I´m Free and Sympathy. Allegedly the people who attended the viewing (I didn´t) were instructed not to discuss any details.

I have also heard rumours that the Maysles filmed the Novermber 30 Miami performance.

<<I have also heard rumours that the Maysles filmed the Novermber 30 Miami performance.>>

It's clearly stated in Stanley Booth's book the Maysles were present at that gig. Probably not too far fetched to assume they did film it...or at least intended to.

Of course the entire show was filmed. You can't just film the parts where something of note happened. This is called editing.

Someone on here mentioned that the cameras they used didn't hold more than 10 minutes of film, and because of this they had to choose what to film. But if Doug says he's seen the whole thing and that Albert Maysels has it, it's true.

I don't think they really filmed all the Madison Square Garden Shows in their entirety. Mind You, the footage was rather expensive and I don't think the Maysles Brothers who were basically documentarians could've afforded filming several shows at Madison Square Garden plus the entire Altamont concert, adding further footage of the support acts at both venues. Seems to be a pipe dream at work.

As a reference I might add that the guy filming Jimi Hendrix' Berkeley concerts couldn't even gather enough footage to complete his "Jimi plays Berkeley" movie without adding further footage of the surrounding riots.

My guess is that there's much less coverage of the concerts by film than by recording.

true - more realistic are the audio of all these shows - there would be definately complete soundboards of the MSG, Baltimore, Boston, Altamont & Miami shows....

I wonder how much footage they shot at Muscle Shoals. We only see them listening to a playback in GS; did they film them recording I wonder?

I read an interview with one of the Maysles Brothers in a Magazine some months ago. But he never went into great detail with Gimme Shelter. It was more of an overview covering all their work. And they certainly aren't as interested in those kind of details as we are... But one would've liked to be the interviewer for a moment and ask some certain questions ;-)

Here is the Maysles video of Carol & Little Queenie from the 1969 MSG concert.
